Social Experient...

Just for fun I want to do a little experiment. I am going to try and apply for some jobs. If I get interviews for these jobs I am going to attend them in a very professional outfit (maybe some chinos with a nice solid color button up with a sweater vest and blazer of some sort and a pair of very professional but noticeable pumps...;patent black maybe). Then I want to see who calls back and if I get any comments at all. The jobs I am going to apply for will be at "mall type" stores like maybe banana republic, the gap, victoria's secret, etc. and see who offers me the job and who doesn't and what sort of reactions I get. I already have a great job and this wouldn't affect that at all...so it doesn't really matter if I get a call back or not...I just want to see what happens. Plus it'll be a reason to get me out in heels in a situation where I really have nothing to gain or lose...a just for fun sort of thing.

Not looking for a job but looking for a job. I love it! Can't wait to see the results.

Well, we'll see what happens...gotta go get some applications and fill them out. I think my first applications will go to hollister, h&m, victoria's secret, and macy's. We'll see what happens! lol

If my job wasn't so physically demanding and time consuming, I would consider working a second in heels. Right now, I'm usually exhausted when I finish the work day, but I'm going to keep this prospect in mind and maybe an opportunity will come my way once I get through my beginning dance lessons (One of my New Year's resolutions is to become somewhat of a proficient high heeled dancer).

It's funny but my second job turned out to be the one I most liked (it's my primary job now). As a movie buff, my second job as a cinema projectionist was a dream job (low paying but in extreme bliss and still able to get by). If only the rest of the world could discover this truth, they too would be happy. Some day people will discover they don't need money to be happy

Great idea, I think you will have some success as you are applying to fashion outlets but will be interesting to see what comments you get. A lot will depend on who interviews I would expect those closer to the shop floor and in fashion would be more tolerant but conservative middle management may n but I shouldn't pre judge. I interview people for jobs at my place and often for the diversity question we have to ask I suggest to the applicant that they have the job and I am a new employee on my first day and I attend dressed asa woman but I am quite clearly a man. I ask "what would you do?" some of the answers are quite funny but the physical reaction and body language they show often is much more telling. Would be interesting to see what result if you applied to a cutting edge fashion outlet , they may even encourage you.

High heels are the shoes I choose to put on, respect my choice as I repect yours.

I just love social experiments and pranks. I look forward to hearing the results. :-)

That makes two of us. I'm sure it'll make for an interesting outcome.

I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman!

Fascinating! Looking forward to updates.

I somehow knew this would get your attention. The subject material is right up your alley, dude.

Years ago somebody told me, he had been doing just that. Applying, just to see what would happen. And then one day he had an interview and the personnel chef that interviewed him looked right through it, and they had a nice talk and the end of the story was that he ended up at that company. So, who knows. Maybe you will run into an offer you cannot say no to as well. We all like to hear about your adventures of course. Y.

Raise your voice. Put on some heels.

Yep!

REPEATEDLY ARGUMENTATIVE, INSULTING AND RUDE. BANNED FOR LIFE.

Yep~~~~~! But it can help take the sting off those cold mornings when all you have are the clothes you're wearing, a sleeping bag, the stars for a roof, and a can of hot coals with a pile of wood to start the next morning's gathering session.

P08C, That is a wonderful idea you have. Part social experiment and, if done on a sufficiently large scale, could become a science experiment. Despite laws about obvious discrimination based on race, religion, sex, etc. there is nothing compelling a business to hire someone showing signs of both sexes via their fashion. Despite apparently shifting attitudes towards a whole range of social issues the fundamental truth will lie in whether or not someone will hire you, on your merits, and not reject you not based upon the shoes on your feet. This will say volumes about companies that publicly espouse diversity and tolerance but are privately hypocritical. It is wonderful for guys in heels to be treated with dignity as customers. It would be revolutionary for them to be treated well as prospective employees. Please let us know what happens and don't hesitate to name companies and locations.HappyinHeels

I would be curious if the retail managers suggest that most employee's find wearing heels while on their feet all day tiring, and suggests that if you get the job you may be more comfortable wearing an athletic type shoe. Never actually saying guys cannot, nor that you could not wear heels.

You bring up a good point Rockpup. It would be an even more interesting experiment if different types of heels could be brought into the equation.

What a good idea !

BTW, what if they call back your "old employer" to know how well you performed in your last job ...

Not likely to happen too often, at least not in the last few years.

Yes, an interesting experiment but I have some sympathy with the various employers whose time you are almost certainly going to waste. Paraphrasing Groucho Marx: 'I wouldn't want to work for anyone who would have me as an employee'.

If you got hired, and you decided to take the job, would you wear heels everyday. I would love to have an office job just to dress cool. I'm in the choir at church, they probably can't wait to see what ill be wearing next sunday. I've worn kneehigh boots, ankle boots, pumps, flare jeans, and skinny jeans. Last sunday I wore flare jeans, 5" pumps and a 70' womans coat with the patchwork design of about 20 different colours on it. Ill post a pic later on tonight. Getting back to the thread, I would do an interview in heels! Sounds exciting. They couldn't not give you the job based on that. Equality issues! They will try not to hire you for others reasons. Trying to make it look like that, just because you have heels on. Keep us updated on your progress!

As an employer, I would not refuse to hire a guy who wore heels to an interview, but not just because I'm passionate about heels for guys. To me it shows individuality, courage, being fashion forward, and disdain for the status quo. I like those qualities in a candidate. Of course, since I'm in the hosiery business, wearing hosiery would be a real plus in getting the job! All this assumes that the candidate has all the other necessary qualifications for the job, like reading, writing, and arithmetic, for example. Steve

I am thinking more likely sarcasm in relation to this comment:

:) Or I hope so anyway... lol

As the younger son in a family business, but with 22yrs in I'd personally be amused about someone applying and wearing heels. While I'd want to chat about it after I would make sure to comment that most sitez/customers are not accepting, and while some hidden heel wedges might slip past people he may not get to wear heels while on the job, since, well, I cannot. Outside of the interview I'd love to get to know them better and find out their heeling history.

Yes, Jim, I agree, that's a fine line. As the former owner/partner of a used car dealership in a small town, I always struggled with some sort of balance about what to wear on my feet. 90% of the time, I chose rather low-heeled clogs which would not attract too much attention, and which would also allow me to do some light work in the shop if necessary. I had my Red Wing work boots for the heavier work.

However, one Saturday, it was my turn to show up by myself (we used to take turns on who had to show up on Saturdays). I decided to wear nicer clothes than I would normally wear, as I didn't have any work to do in the shop, and since we didn't have anything listed on Craigslist at that time, I really didn't expect any customers. I was just there to do paperwork. So I wore some higher heels. Nothing too outrageous, just some clogs with a 3.5" obviously separate and distinct heel. Wouldn't you know it, a customer showed up unexpectedly because the taillight assembly we had sold her to repair her crunched-up quarter panel refused to work properly.

So there I was, standing in front of the shop, on the main drag in town, for 45 minutes, messing with this thing. In heels. It turns out that the problem was a slight internal design change between 2001 and 2002 model years. After rigging it up so that it would work, the customer left happy, and never mentioned a thing about my heels. I'm not sure she noticed. But I always wondered if some of those small town folks ever wondered about that strange little guy who always wore those funny clogs. I'm pretty sure it didn't affect the business at all, but you never know. You do have to be careful, don't you?
