bluesman Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Happy new year to everyone! I rarely post here, but I just had to share this great story. I live in Las Vegas, and if you've ever been here you know it's a great place to wear heels out and about without drawing unwanted attention. At least in the tourist areas it is; that's where l go out in my stilettos and higher chunky heels, anyway. So on to the story: I was doing some Christmas shopping in Walmart one evening and stepped out of the main aisle to check my list. It must have been his height that caught my eye, because a few racks over was a tall, thin guy and a woman going thru the clothes. He was really tall, and as he rounded the rack I could see why: 4 inch black suede stiletto lace up ankle boots! He and his friend chatted and shopped thru the racks and then moved on down the aisle, his heels clicking away. I am not alone, I said to myself (although I was wearing flat riding boots at the time, not heels). Then the very next day as I was leaving the grocery store a gentleman wearing sparkly wedge flip flops passed me in the doorway. Been here 5 years and have never seen any guys in heels, then 2 within 24 hours. So cool. 9 "It's just a flesh wound"
SF Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 And two weeks ago I was in Vegas wearing my wedgie ankle strap sandals.... Fun... Vegas is a fun place to wear heels, and there are many others. Yes there IS hope... ha ha.... Nice story..... Have fun.... sf 1 "Why should girls have all the fun!!"
Romulus Posted January 9, 2020 Posted January 9, 2020 I’ll be in LV next week for work. Hope to get in a bit of elevated time. Where is a good place to wear heels in LV?

Where is a good place to wear heels in LV? Any of the casinos are good choices. All are carpeted so you don't risk slipping on tile, and everyone's busy losing money so no one's paying attention to what you're wearing. I also like to go on Fremont St. and out on the strip, particularly around Plant Hollywood, Bellagio, etc. Again, everyone is busy gawking at the sights. Welcome to Vegas, enjoy! 1 "It's just a flesh wound"
SF Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 (edited) When in Vegas I wear heels everywhere. But I wear heels everywhere anyway. In Vegas it just seems to be more fun. Like bluesman says, there is so much activity going on that no one notices, and if they do, they don't care - unless you get a compliment, which has happened to me several times. And that is nice. One consideration, depending on where you are staying, getting around can involve a LOT of walking. Not an issue in flats, but depending on your heel height and comfort of the shoes, a lengthy walk could be an issue. Many times I have seen gals in heels struggling to get around (still looking for a guy in heels BTW). Some gals even opt to go barefoot - yuck. I would never do that. Enjoy yourself in Vegas..... sf Edited January 13, 2020 by SF can't type rite 1 "Why should girls have all the fun!!"

HappyinHeels Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 All of the above seems pretty accurate to me. Except that part about women going barefoot. Cooler months are one thing but not in July when the average maximum temperature advances to 103F/ 39.5C and pavement temperatures are much hotter than that. Las Vegas exists for enjoyment (and separating you from your money) and they do a magnificent job entertaining the world's tourists. I have become more familiar with it over the last five years as it is on our route from Wisconsin to my my wife's home city of Mexicali, Mexico where the average July maximum is a toasty 110F/43C in late July. I have developed a decent working knowledge of the city after driving around, shopping, and staying there. Yes, wearing heels is no big deal there. Go while you can. Las Vegas will run out of water within 40 years if a different approach to business as usual isn't taken. In the meantime, go and enjoy. HinH 1

HappyinHeels Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 Poor conservation planning in CA and NV have gotten those two states in their predicament. It's not a matter of if just when it happens. Anyone who has seen Lake Mead can only be shocked in the drop of the water level. Too much water usage for too few people and stupid policies in CA regarding water management have rendered this verdict. If CA actually managed for results instead of talking about it this future may have a better ending. I would hope so. You'll see those places which abound in water will have enormous importance in the coming decades. It will become the new gold. HinH 2

HinH Believe it or don't, we spent quite a bit of time studying this issue when I went to law school, even here in Iowa, where we have basically the same "riparian" water usage law as Merry Old England, from which the whole idea came in the first place. Obviously, something different was needed for the arid areas of the U.S.
HappyinHeels Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 Quite right. One entity coveting what another entity has been going on since the dawn of humankind. It would be idealistic to think we could all manage our resources or trade for what we need but that world is not rooted in reality. Much change needs to happen over the coming decades. Quit building up the coasts or make the investment to raise the coastal cities. Find alternatives to oil that vehicles can actually use. Get away from making so much plastic for a single use. Hashtagging and fake activism by people whose own carbon footprint could be seen from space only fuels the noise and not the solution. My hope is the current generation may be the ones to actually solve the issue. If only they'll put down those cellphones and stop taking selfies. I'll keep recycling our stuff as well as about 1000 pounds or so (400 kg) of materials I pick up in an average year, try to use solar where I can, and buy clothes at a second-hand retailer instead of new. Just one family mind you. It's a start. HappyinHeels 1
Pumped Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 Related water usage, I find it strange that we irrigate crops in arid areas of the country, and in the area I live in we grow easily crops with no irrigation, but the government pays farmers to put land in CRP, Crop Reduction Program. We have millions of acres of good farm land sitting idle that will grow crops with little effort. There are parts of the country that should have never been populated. Most of southern California is a desert and we pump millions of gallons of water from the Colorado River that direction. If the LA basin had to fend for itself for water and electricity it would be in trouble.

Years ago when my ex-wife first moved to Iowa from Southern California, we were driving through the countryside and she idly asked, "Where are all the irrigation rigs?" I chuckled and said, "We're very innovative here in Iowa. We have come up with a new system of irrigation that doesn't require expensive equipment and a distant supply of water." "Oh, really? How does that work?" "It's something we like to call 'rain.' " 2
SF Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 (edited) Ha ha, that's a good one.... Out here in CA the farmers get mad when it rains 'cause certain crops get damaged by too much water (rain) at the wrong time. In the midwest farmers get angry when it does not rain, they have no irrigation option. Yes, CA is on the road to collapse - unfortunately..... Smile... sf Wow, this thread sure has gone haywire... From sightings of guys in heels in Vegas to water rights - whew!!!! Now that's a stretch.... Sorry bluesman... I may be back in vegas next month.... In heels of course... sf Edited January 20, 2020 by SF "Why should girls have all the fun!!"

Maybe boots have thicker/more sole layers since people tend to wear them more in wet weather.

Maybe boots have thicker/more sole layers since people tend to wear them more in wet weather. I once completely trashed a pair of absolutely gorgeous Via Spiga boots wearing them while I took my then 5 year old son trick-or-treating on Halloween. It was very soggy that evening, and we stayed out the entire two hours walking from house to house (you can still do that in my town). The thin leather sole was never quite the same again, and I had to have it replaced with rubber. Even then, the stains on the part that doesn't touch the ground were quite visible. To be fair, I don't know that my Florsheims would have tolerated that kind of abuse, either. I guess that's what rain boots are for. Then again, I had a pair of Söfft sandals that made it through a thorough soaking when I got caught far from home on foot during a sudden downpour. Those did not have leather bottoms, though, and were otherwise incredibly durable. Once upon a time, I played in a country band, and they made me wear cowboy boots. Those boots had leather soles, and I don't ever remember worrying about rain, snow, etc. I think I eventually wore through the sole over 2 or 3 years, but by that time I was into wearing heels (or higher heels than normal cowboy boots anyway) and I tossed them out. They were not expensive. 1
HappyinHeels Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 Yes I know blame the dude in Wisconsin for sending the thread off track but remember one fundamental thing. Without dependable water Las Vegas, and all the trappings which it offers, will cease to exist. Inescapable fact. I just went into a diatribe over it. Besides, doesn't it make sense for some of us off-kilter folks to go off-track??? HinH

So where you're from, do people pronounce it Ahmish or Aimish? Here, it depends on whether you were raised in town or on the farm.
p1ng74 Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Hey I was in Amish country last week. I stopped in at their Country Market store a couple times for a sandwich, non-homogenized milk, and all the other goodies they have there. In the back of my mind, I kind of wondered as I walked around if the ladies working there have ever seen a guy in heels before. Well, now they have. This is what I was wearing - snapped the photo at the airport on the way home:
