Thigh Boots in Public

I’ve had two enjoyable outings inspired by JeffB’s and HappFeats recent postings about a sweater dress: Friday – After work I stopped in out local GoodWill and found a knee length wool grey sweater (not a dress) that has one button at the breast. I really liked the look of this sweater when I tried it on so I added it to my collection. When I got out to the car, I changed my work close for an ankle length brown leather skirt and my thigh boots with 5” stilettos. I had recently commented to renex that his skirt would look better with his sweater tucked in at the waist and I tried to follow my own advice but the grey ribbed turtleneck I was wearing was too bulky to tuck in and fasten the skirt so I had to wear it out. I added the long brown sweater to this mix and headed for some shopping. Even though it was 20F (-7C), the outfit was very warm without a coat. I stopped in Walgreen’s and Sam’s and a different GoodWill all without incident. I did get a couple of complements on the outfit from some of the folks I know at Sam’s Even though it is warm and comfortable I still am not crazy about the long skirt and 5” heels. I’ll have to keep playing with it to come up with something I like better. Saturday – I was around 15F (-10C) and I needed to get some cat food. I went out wearing the long sweater, a thinner grey turtleneck, a short black leather skirt, black hose and black leather thigh boots with 5” stilettos. This turned out to be a very public outing. The PetsMart I went to is in a strip mall by a WallMart which is a different store that I normally use and the parking lot was packed. I walked into the store and found part of what I wanted but had to get a clerk to get the rest of my order. The clerk managed to forget a discount when she rang up my order and had to get the manager to process a refund and ring it up again. All this time, I’m standing there watching the show. I took my stuff out to my car then walked to a Payless that was in the strip mall. On the way to the store I thought I overheard a, “Would you look at that” from a couple of guys in coveralls. In the Payless I looked around but their stock only went up to 12. They had a pair of knee high sneakers in 9 and I asked the clerk if they were available in 12 or 13 and she checked on the computer and said they weren’t in any of the stores. Since I was right by a WallMart, I drove over to their parking lot, which was also packed, and parked at the far end and walked to the store. A guy in front of me dropped a $10 bill and at first he didn’t know how to react when I called to him, but he was all smiles and happy when I gave him the $10. I spent at least half an hour “shopping” and finally picked up a pair of heel cushions in the shoe department and headed for the register. I waited in line then walked back out to my car. I drove to my favorite thrift emporium and wandered around for a while. I tried on a long leather coat that was the same length as the sweater but decided to pass it up. I did find a Beethoven CD set which is very nice. The register clerk was chatty and greeted me like a long lost friend. I headed to a St Vincent DePaul where they know me well. I had to park on the street and walk about half a block to get to the store. I found a cute little hand painted vase and a pair of grey suede slacks that were my size and on sale for $3. The clerk at the store knows me and complemented me on the look and especially on the sweater. I did turn a few heads but for the most part the outing was uneventful. I went to a series of places I have been to before but not very often and my outfit was pushing it a bit so I was being very alert to what was going on around me. That meant that I was exhausted by the time I got back home. All in all a great couple of days. After seeing these pictures, the outfit dosen’t look anywhere as daring as it felt.

I went to my cardiologist today and he gave me a clean bill of health! I went to the office wearing a black leather jacket, gray ribbed turtleneck, olive green pants, and black leather pull on thigh boots with 4” stilettos worn over the pants. The nurse that took my blood pressure commented, “Those boots sure look warm.” “Yes they are but they are very comfortable.” “I can’t find boots because my feet are too small and I could never walk on a heel that high.” “I normally wear a heel an inch higher than this.” “Really! I admire your ability to walk on them. I had a pair of expensive heels that I only wore for parties but they broke and I haven’t worn then since.” About this time the doctor came in, glanced at my boots, then told me about my heart (which is fine). Later I caught up with the nurse and recommended my cobbler and she sincerely thanked me. I have a dental appointment tomorrow and guess what I’m wearing. :pulsingheart::blinkbigeyes:

Glad to read you got a clean bill of health! Two thumbs up! Meanwhile, you are one bold individual to wear what you did to the doctor's office, and soon, to the dentist! Bravo!

TBG:-) It's great that you got a clean bill of health, I'm happy for you. You are in trouble if you don't have good health above all. I don't think that my doctors or dentist are ready to see me in outfits like yours. Really bold of you. Cheers--- Dawn HH

Thanks so much for the kind expressions about my health. As for wearing thigh boots with 4" heels to the Doctor's office...I've been writing for some time now that there just another pair of shoes. There the same style JeffB wore on his last jaunt, in fact almost the same outfit as JeffB wore.

I've worn thigh boots the the last eight doctors I've seen over the past several years. I've been expecting to get told that wearing 5" heels was bad for my feet or something, but not a word has been said except one guy asked why I was wearing them. I figure most doctors have seen everything already anyway and there paid professionals (just like sales clerks in a shoe store) who want me to come back again and spend more money.

Going to the dentist wearing my black leather pull on thigh boots with 4" stilettos over jeans was a non-event. I have been wearing knee high boots over slacks or jeans since I've been going to this guy and, other than a quick glance by the nurse when I walked in, I was just wearing another pair of shoes.

TBG:-) Since over a period of time you have conditioned your doctors that you wear heels they are used to seeing you dressed that way. If you didn't wear them they would be the first to notice and may mention that to you. Every thing seems to be statis quo for you so don't change anything. You know--If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don’t think the doctors I’ve seen over the years would remember me 30 minutes after I left the office. They know me as a folder with a lot of papers inside (which often gets lost). Most of the doctor visits were not repeat visits rather they were visits to a specialist or an emergency care. As for wearing boots to the doctor’s office, it’s like wearing them when I go shopping, it’s a good excuse to be out and about in a safe place and I like to take advantage of it. Besides, it might make the doctor pay a little more attention to me.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, I couldn’t agree more. I’ll probably try biking again as soon as the ice and snow melt.

TBG:-) Well, well! The snow is finally melting and I once again can see my grass. My car looks like a pillar of salt and I am amazed that it still knows how to run under all of that. I would wash it except that we are to get some rain. Maybe that will wash a bit of the salt off of it and I will know again what color it is supposed to be. Maybe you should check to see if yor bicycle is still there and ready to operate. Of course you will be wearing heeled thighboots when you ride it, won't you. Cheers--- Dawn HH

After running into the walls at home Saturday morning, I decided to go to the movies. I pulled on a pair of jeans, blue turtleneck, black leather coat, and black leather thigh boots with 5” stilettos.

On the way to the theater, I stopped in a guitar store I had never been to before to look for a set of strings I really like. I had to wait a while for a clerk which meant standing around for a while. I was disappointed that they didn’t have the strings. As I was leaving a young lady employee at the checkout asked where I had gotten my boots and offered that she had a friend that would love them. I gave her a couple of referenced and she thanked me and gave me a big smile.

I headed to the theater and after getting my ticket, I had to wait for the auditorium to clear out from the pervious showing. The movie, 2012 is a disaster film and “disaster” sums up my opinion of it. I almost left in the middle but stuck it out in the hope it would improve… it didn’t.

After the movie I stopped in a Sam’s for a couple items.

All of these stops were non-events. Yeah, I got a couple of looks but that’s to be expected and part of the fun. By the time I got home I was very tired, part of the reason for that was being in public wearing thigh boots with 5” heels which means being engaged full time, the other reason was that walking in 5” stilettos can be tiring, which is why most folks don’t wear them full time.

It was a fun afternoon.

The bike is in great shape but riding in 5” heels dosen’t work very well (I tried but the arch of the shoe just didn’t work.) I can ride with up to a 4” heel but a 2” – 3” knee high boots is more comfortable, and the shaft of a thigh boot going up past the knee is a bit restrictive when I’m ridding.

TBG:-) To answer your comment about wearing heels to your doctors--- Mickey and I both have pretty much the same set of doctors between us and we have to see them on a series of appointments each year, so that would let wearing heels out for us if we could wear them as I'm sure that they would definately be noticed if I did it. TEE! HEE! Mickey hasn't been out of the house since November because of her physical condition and the weather. She sure was glad to see all of the snow melting so that she could see the driveway and the grass. She is getting a bad case of "cabin fever" right now. Cheers--- Dawn HH

Sunday – I decided to give going to the movies another try so I headed out wearing jeans, a grey ribbed turtleneck, black leather jacket and black leather thigh boots with 5” stilettos. I went to the same cineplex. The staff there is starting to get used to a guy in heeled boots coming in. I did notice one of the concession stand workers (young girl) checking out my footwear. Other than that going to the movies was uneventful.

While I was out I headed to a different music store for a guitar cord. The gal that waited on me was very helpful and, if I didn’t know better, I would think guys in thigh boots came in all the time. Anyway I wandered around after my purchase and went into the acoustic guitar room (separate room with humidity control) and played several instruments. I had a great time trying several brands. The sales gal came in and asked if I needed any help but I declined and headed on home.

I know it takes some of the excitement out of going out but wearing thigh boots with 5” stilettos is really becoming just wearing another pair of shoes.

Dawn HH – Sorry to hear Mickey is down with “cabin fever”. Sometimes it helps to just walk outside the front door for a few minutes. She wouldn’t have to go far, sometimes just a few steps outside will break the grip of “cabin fever”. You guys are in my thoughts.

TBG:-) Great thought from you. Now if only I could convince Mickey to step outside for a few minutes. She is so afraid of falling and I can't blame her. She feels it is safer to stay inside where she can grab the walls or furniture. You are in our thoughts quite frequently as we reflect on your visit to the Museum. Cheers--- Dawn HH

I stopped at Sam’s last night and again tonight. It has become a great place to try different stuff.

Last night I stopped at Kroger’s and Sam’s wearing a dark grey wool turtleneck, beige slacks, a brown leather jacket and brown knee high boots with 3 ½” block heels worn over my slacks. Some folks noticed and one guy in Sam’s gave me a “looking over his glasses” look as I walked by him, only he wasn’t wearing glasses. Other than that there was little to no reaction and no comment.

Tonight I stopped at Sam’s wearing a grey turtleneck, black hose a brown suede knee length skirt, the brown leather coat, and the same brown boots. Again there wasn’t any reaction or comment. Several of the Sam’s employees greeted me through out the store and my favorite cashier said she liked the knee high boots better then my thigh boots.

My main observation from wearing the knee high boots is that they aren’t as warm as the thigh high ones. The temperature was in the mid 30s F (0C) and with the skirt and knee high boots, I noticed it was chilly.

I wore the knee high boots because I have worn them to work under my slacks for both days.

Set a chair outside then bundle Mickey up and set her on it for a few minutes. Another option is a wheel chair (just because you use one once in a while dosen't mean you stuck in one for ever). Then there is always the Scotter Store, but if I know you, Mickey would never get to use it. When all else fails, open a window and let her breath. Best wishes.

TBG:-) Thanks vey much for the list of possibles. Mickey hasn't been out since early December and when she goes out it is to make a doctor appointment. That is the story of our lives it seems. Today she had a doctors appointment and since the snow has finally disappeared from the driveway, I was able to get her into the car. Playing some XM 50's on 5 tunes on the car radio helped her mood tremendously and she started to sing to the tunes. She has an appointment at the eye doctor next Thursday and then we have to go to the foot doctor to be fitted for diabetic shoes. Our friends are going on ship cruises and vacatons in Florida and we get to go the doctors and hospitals. Cheers--- Dawn HH

Dawn! There isn't anything that says you can't stop at Ruby Tuesday's and get a bowl of soup or salid on the way to or from the Dr's office. That's one way of getting out of the house for a whille.

At any rate , we admire her courage and are still eager to hear of her progress. So, please give her our regards and best wishes for acontinued speedy recovery.

Well it’s Friday and that means blue knee high boots with a 2” block heel worn under jeans at work. After work I changed the jeans for a blue leather knee length straight line skirt. I was also wearing black hose, a dark gray wool turtleneck and a black leather jacket.

My first stop was to fill the gas tank. I stood by the pump the whole time the tank was filling including the time a lady pulled up to the pump behind me with her headlight on. The blue leather really looked nice in the bright lights.

Next was a stop at PetsMart for a case of cat food. The folks saw me come in and called out across the store, “Chicken or turkey?” They know me that well.

After that I went to Sam’s and as I was walking around, several of the employees greeted me with a loud “Hi there” and a wave. One gal I know well offered, “You look nice tonight.” I thanked her and continued shopping. Most of the time the folks recognize me, but tonight they seemed to be going out of their way to say “Hi”. I even had to go back into the tires section and help selecting a windshield wiper blade. The gur there didn’t bat an eye.

I spent some time in the parking lot loading stuff into my car and changing the wiper blade.

The last stop was an oil change shop. The only reaction was a bit of surprise on the manager’s face when I got out of the car. After that he and the rest of his crew swarmed all over my car looking for additional things for me to spend money on. I actually made it out with just an oil change. I really was surprised that no one even batted an eye.

I went to the movies this afternoon wearing jeans, black long sleeved v-neck top, black leather jacket and black leather thigh boots with 5” stilettos. I walked in from the parking lot and noticed a car stop and all the inhabitants stared at me as I walked past. In the theater The gals (high school?) at the concession stand stared as I walked through the lobby. I thought the movie was going to be a private showing until a minute before the show started when two families came in. The movie was Spike Lee’s Where the Wild Things Are, strange film. After the movies I stopped in a nearby Sam’s for one item. I didn’t use a shopping cart so my boots were clearly visible. (Its amazing what a shopping cart will hide.) I got a couple of looks. At the register I got one of my favorite clerks and she blossomed when I came through the line. This kid is hyper and I told her she needed to slow down. She said that everyone tells her that. Out of the blue I asker her what size shoe she wore and without hesitation she told me “size six”. I told her I had a pair of these (and indicated my boots) in a 7 ½. She said (gushed actually) that she would love to have a pair but she didn’t think a 7 ½ would work. After Sam’s I went to Kroger’s to have a prescription filled. That meant I walked around the store for half an hour without a cart until the prescription was ready. A couple of folks took notice but nothing out of the ordinary. All in all a nice outing.

By the way you talk about her, she sounds a LOT younger, and offering a pair of your thigh high boots to a young woman you dont even know must have been kind of weird/creepy for her, thus the embarrassment. Am I the only one who thinks thats really quite odd/creepy?

It wouldnt be any different if it were the other way round too, like a teenage boy on the checkout, 60+ woman offers him a pair of something she might be wearing, regardless if its male/female item...

Its embarrassing if/when a relative might do that, but a total stranger in a supermarket offering thigh high boots does carry other possible vibes too other than just footwear...

TBG: I got one of my favorite clerks and she blossomed when I came through the line.

It appears from the way TBG described the incident, he must not be a "total" stranger -- not like she had never seen him before. And, she must have accepted TBG's offer in the harmless way that he meant it because she didn't call the police and have him arrested for being a "pervert" or take any offense at the comment.

Admittedly, not the kind of thing I would say unless she expressed an explicit desire to get a similar pair of boots -- it was, in my opinion, kinda "forward" and could have been an "awkward" moment for her for an instant. However, it wasn't and not as bad as some would make it.

I went shopping on the way home wearing brown slack and a black turtleneck (work clothes) but wore brown knee high boots with 3 ½” block heels over the slacks. At work I wear them under my slacks but when I sit down the pant cuff is half way up the shaft of the boots;` I don’t try to hide them.

I stopped at Kroger’s and WallGreens and only got a couple of glances at either stop. The boots blended well with the slacks so you had to pay a little more attention to see the boots but some folks did, most, however, didn’t notice at all.

As to Tech’s comments about my asking a lady her shoe size being “really quite odd/creepy”… Well I’ve always been a little odd but the creepy part misses the mark. The lady is younger than I am but most women not in a nursing home are younger than I am. She and I have discussed boot wearing before (see post #1880 in this thread) so she wasn’t surprised, offended, or upset when I asked her shoe size, and she was genuinely disappointed when I told her I had a pair larger than her size. I didn’t actually offer to give/sell/trade her anything even though I probably would have given them to her. The conversation ended with smiles for both of us.

I do appreciate Tech’s perspective though. It’s good to see my actions through other peoples’ eyes. I have been known to do things that seemed quite normal to me that other folks thought was a bit eccentric. After all there are only a few other guys/gals on this site that wear thigh boots with heels in public most of the time, but you only get to go around once so I don’t mind being eccentric.

Bubba136:-) Today I was finally able to talk Mickey into lunch after our appointment to be fitted for diabetic shoes and insoles. She was also fitted for an up-grade on the socket for her prosthetic devise. Ater we went to McDonalds, one of our favorite places to eat, and had lunch. Afterward Mickey was getting tired so I took her home so she could lay down and rest while I post this. Under the topic “Too much of a good thing”, I have been able to work at home for the past two days (miracles of modern technology allowed me to work on systems in Indiana, Germany, and France from my home). I spent two days wearing very casual clothes, black hose, and black leather pull on thigh boots with 4” stilettos. I did have to leave home a couple of times and I just left my boots on and headed on out. (Normally I’m out wearing guy shoes and change into my boots in the car.) I even had to flag down to postman to give him a letter…his eyes just got a little big when he saw me but that was all. I have a couple of observations: Thigh boots are warm, and the extra restriction around your knees, when your are sitting, can get uncomfortable. To the second point, I have installed elastic in the upper part of the boot shaft, just below my knee, to hold the boots up and this insures that they stay up over my knees so the extra leather is always there when I’m sitting. Other than that, they are just another pair of heeled shoes. In fact, I noticed the heel more than anything else. I wear a 2” to 3” block heel on boots at work and often wear flats at home so being on a 4” heel for a couple of days, though not uncomfortable, was something that took a little getting used to. I plan to continue wearing my boots at home as much as I can because I really like the style, and in these cooler days, the warmth is appreciated. But like I’ve said, they are now just another pair of shoes.

I am considering trying a pair of lace up thigh boots. Can anyone offer any advice, experience, recommendations? They seem like they would be more adventurous than the pull on or zipper style but a lace up with a zipper might be a good compromise. Any thoughts?

I thought the same and decided to give in to curiosity. Was a little disappointed - it takes getting used to lacing them up and it's quite a chore. Not to mention that if you use the zipper instead you risk getting part of the laces unhooked. Tricky and I personally didn't see the added "value", so to speak.

I went to a concert Saturday night wearing jeans, a black turtleneck, black leather jacket and black leather thigh boots with 5” stilettos.

The artist was Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadors, and the performance was great. If you ever get a chance to see this bunch, its worth the time and effort.

At the hall, I walked in to the lobby to picked up my ticket and the folks at the will call desk greeted me like an old friend (I’ve been wearing boots to this concert series for several years now and they do recognize me). One of the ushers, spotting my boots, asked me if ready for the cold weather and I assured him I was. I got a seat in the third row on the isle where I had clear view of the performers. Since I had never seen this group before, I chatted with some of the other patrons about the performers and got some idea of what I was in for. I was early so I got up and wandered around a good bit and I did the same thing at the intermission. Previously I had just kept my seat but tonight I wandered all over the place and mixed with the crowd. A couple of folks took a second glance but other than that, on one said a thing.

There were a lot of folks at the concert that personally knew Antsy McClain and one gay came up to me and said he had gone to high school with Austy and we chatted a bit but then he said he really wanted to tell me how cool my boots were. He asked where I had gotten them and if they were leather so we chatted about wearing boots for a while. I gave him a copy of a resource sheet about thigh boots and boot sources that I carry with me (I get asked about my boots a lot).

All in all it was a great concert and a great outing!

Thanks for the response to that old post. I’m still considering a pair of lace up boots but I haven’t had the discretionary funds to try them. If you have a pair with speed hooks and a zipper, try lacing the boots through the hole in the speed hooks (as though they were eyelets. I’ve done this with a pair of ankle lace up boots and it worked well for me.
