Bubba136 Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Dear Dawn & Mickey; Thanks for the update. I've been wondering how you two have been getting along. While your news isn't exactly encouraging, I am confident that with spirits as strong as yours, everything will be ok. Have faith in your Doctors and let him guide you through to recovery. Just remember that all of your friends here at hhplace are pulling for you and that you are always in our thoughts and prayers. Trust in God. He will give you the strength to stay the course. Please keep us posted and don't let Mickey give up. There are worse things than losing a leg. Being mentally comfortable in your own mind is the key to wearing heels in public.
shyguy Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Hey Dawn and Mickey, good to hear you are both still around. I really do wish Mickey the fastest of recoveries, and both of you take care of yourselves and each other. As Bubba says there are worse things than losing a leg, indeed a friend of mine lost a foot to infection, then his leg, but 6 months later he was walking on an artificial one so that no one would ever know anything different. On a brighter note, you haven't lost anything yet Mickey, and you both have each other still, so don't ever give up. He was so narrow minded he could see through a keyhole with both eyes. raincat Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Hi Dawn and Mickey, I also would like to thank you for the update, Dawn. Even though I have not often commented on your postings, they have been followed with interest. You and Mickey have both suffered some tough luck in battling health problems in the last year. Thankfully, it appears that your health is improving, Dawn. Let's hope that Mickey can take hope from that and see that her doctors have what is needed to get her back on the road to better health, too. Godspeed in her recovery. Dawn HH Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Hi there, everyone. It may always seem that I have a tale of woe to tell. Such is life, but things happen when you get a few miles on the odometer of your body I guess. Mickey has had another down-turn and incurred another infection in her leg up to her knee this time. She just recently spent another week in the hospital for massive injections of antibiotics and we have had some high level meetings with her PCP, bone, and her CPC infectious doctor about her condition. We were given three choices of what to do about the situation. Time has eliminated the first choice completely by now. The third choice is that the leg must come off in order to save her life and give her a few more years to enjoy here on Earth. We have decided to go with the second choice for now as a last resort before having to go to the final third choice. Mickey has resigned herself that the second choice is to start massive daily intervenes antibiotic infusions four times a day at six, twelve, six and twelve again each day. These take a lot out of her energy and make her sleep a lot, but she knows this must be done and is willing to go through this. This procedure started in the hospital and is continuing in a rehab home where she will be until the middle of February. Her blood must be under constant servaillance to determine if she is getting too much or too little antibiotics. Too little will do her no good and too much could kill her. Even though this is a dire situation, Mickey is getting the best care that can be provided for her. If her leg improves and finally heals over, it could open up again a few months down the road and there will be no choice but that it will have to come off. We have talked this over extensively between us and Mickey feels much better about her situation and she has finally come to the conclusion that if the leg must go, it will go and she will break in a new artificial one. On a more happy note, I am still putting along taking care of the house, the dog, working a few days a week, and keeping my sanity and Mickeys up-beat. Always thinking positivly and up-beat. Cheers--- Dawn HH Mickey68 High Heeled Boots Forever!

Thighbootguy Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 DawhHH - I am embarrassed that I have not been following this thread. I have greatly missed your comments and then discovered this thread. I’ll not even try to describe my emotions as I started to read through it. What great news at the end that you and Mickey are doing well. I suspect that there will also be a few trains running better when you get back in the full swing of thing. Best wishes my friend. I dream of a world where chickens can cross roads without having their motives questioned.
Dawn HH Posted February 20, 2008 Author Posted February 20, 2008 Friends:-) Now since Mickey is out of the rehab home and back into our home, Nurse Nightmare, (me), and her assistant, Fez, "The Wonder Dog", have been given the duties to evaluate and dress Mickey's leg daily as she tries to finish her recuperation here at home. This has finally given me an opportunity to see my specialist about my knees. I am receiving shots in them for the next 6 weeks to help improve the pain and mobility in them with the hopes that something can be done in the near future for my badly arthritic ridden hips in hopes to try to stabize my walk and balance. Mickey hasn't driven a car since the end of last March, but we have hopes that she may be able to go back to that activity in the near future to alleviate my driving in case that I may have to have hip surgery which will tie me up from that for quite a while. Cheers--- Dawn HH High Heeled Boots Forever!
Dawn HH Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 Friends:-) Mickey has just recently been fitted for a new leg brace that supports her leg much more than her old one. It goes from her toes up to her knee all around her leg and is heavily boned up the back of her leg to keep her ankle as straight as possible for assistance and support in her walking. She still hasn't been able to get back to her driving yet, still has pain in that leg, and still has to have the assistance of a walker and a wheel chair, and my duty to dress her leg daily still remains. The fact that she might have to have her leg taken off at a later date still looms in the future. She has been released from her nurses and therapists and is now totally in my daily care. She just made her 66th birthday on March the 26th but hasn't been feeling good enough to go out to celebrate it yet. As for me---I have had x-rays and an MRI on my lower back which causes me constant pain 24/7. I have an appointment on the 16th of April with the spine surgeon to see just what can be done to straighten me out. Both our out-looks are bright and up-beat as we just take things as they come and support each other day to day. The way I look at it---if you get smacked down you just get up, dust your self off, and keep on going. Cheers--- Dawn HH Mickey68 High Heeled Boots Forever!
Bubba136 Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Good to hear from you Dawn. I have been wondering how you and Mickey have been. I was just about to ask in an open forum if anyone had heard from you guys lately. Glad to learn that Mickey is getting better, although much more slowly than you would like. And, that you seem to be handling the situation with style, grace and lots of love. Both of you are in our prayers and our sincere hope is that things will quickly improve to a point where you can resume your regular posting here with us. Please keep us informed of both of your progress. Being mentally comfortable in your own mind is the key to wearing heels in public.

Dawn HH Posted May 3, 2008 Author Posted May 3, 2008 Hi guys and dolls:wavey: Mickey is slowly getting back to her driving now, which is good as we need to have someone to be able to drive as there is only the two of us. Her new brace seems to be doing her a lot of good as she only has a bit of pain in her leg once in a while, not 24/7 as before. She still needs a wheel chair for longer distances such as at a shopping maul and her walker for very short distances. The spectre of her leg coming off still looms in the future at this time. Last evening, after a very long period of time, we were able to take our 1935 Chevrolet to a cruise-in and have some good food, good music, and good conversation. We both really enjoyed ourselves as most of our outings lately have been to the doctors, hospitals, re-hab homes, and specialists. Our car is always the hit of the show with everybody. We have a tour coming up in September for a week through Virginia and West Virginia and are hoping that we can make that one for sure as we missed some tours, car shows, and cruise-ins the last couple of seasons. NNow for me!!! IIt seems that Dawn HH will be heading for some sserious surgery on my spine on May 15. I have oosteo-arthritis in my spine in 3 places. The surgeon will go in to put a rod in to bridge the gaps on the spine that are being eaten away. My right leg is too far gone to allow any improvement from the surgery so all they can do is to have me wear a leg brace from the knee down for the rest of my life to allow me to walk in a better fashion. I hate to say it, but I guess my high heel wearing days are coming to an end after being able to do so for many decades. Maybe I still might be able to wear them around the house where I can grab the walls and furniture for support. Time will tell. BUMMER!!! My left leg is starting to go the way of the right one but the surgeon is positive that the spine surgery will improve that and I should be able to walk O.K. again. I can't drive with my leg brace on so I take it with me when I drive and put it on when I park the car. As the Brits would say, both Mickey and I are keeping a stiff upper lip and forging ahead to the future. Cheers--- Mickey68 Dawn HH High Heeled Boots Forever!

Dawn HH Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 Hey friends:-) Mickey had an appointment today at her bone specialist on her leg. He was impressed that her incision has finally completely closed over and has stopped seeping daily. Since this has happened, I don't have to clean and dress it daily and it makes it much easier for her to shower since it doesn't have to be covered when she does. The specialist has also changed his decision that her leg must eventually come off so it can stay on for now. If it begins to open up and seep daily again, we are to contact him immediately about it. So it appears that things are starting to finally look up for a change. So now it has been declared that she can go and get a new pair of diabetic walking shoes. Mickey is happy about that. Sorry---no heels. She is not very happy about that. I don't blame her, I wouldn't be either. Mickey will have to continue to wear her leg brace, but she has started to transfer from a wheelchair to her walker and she has some errands to do tomorrow so it will give her a bit more practice driving while I will be at work. Her next appointment will be on June 26 just two days before our 40th wedding anniversary. As for me, I picked up my leg brace last Thursday and guickly found out that I can't drive with it on. I drive where I am going with the brace on the seat and I put it on when I get there. There is always ways around things, I guess. Cheers--- Dawn HH High Heeled Boots Forever!
Bubba136 Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Wow, some significant gains, Dawn. Glad to hear about them. Very encouraging to day the least. Please let Mickey know that we're all cheering for her (and you). Keep us posted. Being mentally comfortable in your own mind is the key to wearing heels in public.
