JeffB
Just for fun, I've decided to experiment with letting my fingernails grow, just to see what it would be like. I must say, even though it's rather early in the process, I already like how my fingers look slim and tapered with longer nails. While I've done some rudimentary filing, shaping and buffing of my own, I plan to go to a salon to get a proper manicure after another month of so, and yes, I will paint them for jaunts as well. I think that will make for great fun. Opinions? I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman!

mlroseplant
I guess it depends on your hand type. Lots of young men in Vietnam keep their nails on the very longish side for males. By "longish," I mean about 5-6 mm, and it doesn't look too bad. My own hands have gotten so thick and meaty from years of manual labor that I wouldn't look good with long nails at all. I do try to keep about 3 mm nails on all but the little finger of my right hand, but that, as with TBG, is for fingerstyle guitar playing, not for the look. SleekHeels
I usually keep my nails longish too, maybe 4-5 mm, and occasionally paint them either a pale bronze or pale pink, or sometimes a stronger shade of medium to dark red (and once even sparkly royal blue which was fun). The colour definitely reveals any irregularities so it's essential to maintain the shape. I'm sure the salon experience would be fun, but I've always felt it's more fun to do it myself and save the money to spend on heels. It really changes how you do things too.... after a few mishaps you learn not to rummage around in your purse for coins, and certainly to avoid ring-pull soda cans. I usually apply 4 thin coats: a clear base coat, two colour coats, then a clear top coat. I find that's a lot more resilient than just a single colour coat (but a little more effort to remove). Go for it Jeff, I'm sure it'll add an exciting new dimension to your fashion experience. If you like it, wear it.
JeffB
Thanks for the advice, SH! Like I said, while I'm early in the process, I already like how my fingers look with my nails having grown longer, and I'm most eager to see how they'll look when painted. I have no doubt this will make for considerable fun! I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman!
Thighbootguy
As miroseplant mentioned I use my nails for playing fingerstyle guitar. I tried putting a nail on my little finger but for my style playing it was more trouble than it was worth. My natural nails are soft and thin and last about 15 minutes when I play a nylon string guitar. The salon nails are tough. You can open a ring top can with them but they do get in the way when trying to use your fingertips, as in working with coins. SleekHeels makes a good point, the salon experience is fun. I always wear my thighboots when I go and I drive the folks doing my nails (guys and gals) nuts because I don't want them to shape the nail tips. I keep a set of files (course and fine) in my guitar case. I do have them buff the nails surfaces to give them a glossy sheen. I will also apply a clear polish under the nail tips where the salon nail extends past my natural nail as a sealant. The only drawback to salon nails is water getting under the nail. They survive hand washing but immersing them in water can cause problems. I haven't been bitten by the color bug. I'm happy with them a natural color. I dream of a world where chickens can cross roads without having their motives questioned.

mtnsofheels
Nails are addictive as heels are. I have been getting manicures for years, mostly clear and in last couple of years I get gel clear coat that stays for 2-3 weeks. Once I have more time off in spring and fall I do a french with longer nails, like upto 10mm past tips of fingers. I certainly like the clean and taken care hands versus the ratty beaten fingers I used have, In public rarely do have any questions about them, same kind reaction as heels, so I just do it! Steve63130
I had ratty looking nails, too, and about 4 years ago I went to a salon and got my first professional manicure. I couldn't believe the difference. I just got a buff, no polish, but my nails looked much better than before. I went back a month later and this time got a clear polish. A couple of months after that, I got a pale pink polish, pretty much my skin color. Then I got into a glossy satin rose color. Eventually I also tried a pedicure and that was the ultimate in pampering. I treat myself to one every month now. Then about 2 and a half years ago I switched to a new local salon that uses organic products. The place is clean and the gals are wonderful. My color palette has expanded to include dark and light copper colors on my fingers, and silver, copper, and palladium on my toes. It's fun, and I am amazed that people don't ask about it more often. I've been asked by one guy, and complimented by 2 women - all strangers. And that's it, over 4 years. Like heels, people just don't care. BTW, when I get a pedi each month, I wear thong sandals until the paint dries. Last month I wore my Ralph Lauren "Roseanne" sandals. The gals are used to me in heels, so it's no big deal to them. robbiehhw
I've been getting both manicures and pedicures for over a decade. My nails are medium longish but not too long. I wear a lot of clear and fairly light colors on my fingernails. I'm a bit more freestyle on my toes and lately i have been into various shades of maroon/burgundy. aristoc
I keep mine medium short but shaped. Never experienced any adverse comments, although have noticed a few double takes especially when polished. Usually wear clear polish, but sadly not today in pic!

Thighbootguy
Oooh! Nice! Very nice! That's what I want my nails to look like! It's easy to fix that. On your next jaunt include a stop at a nail salon. It's great fun especially when dressed like most of the other patrons. I always wear my boots when I go. I always go to the same salon since they know how I want my nails done, but, if you are having standard work done, going to a different salon each time might be fun. You're sure to find one you really like. TBG I dream of a world where chickens can cross roads without having their motives questioned.
JeffB
Well, I haven't been to a salon yet, but enclosed is a pic of what my nails look like so far. I have to say I really love having long nails because of how they make my fingers look slender and tapered. And while I spend a lot of time at a keyboard as part of my job as a personnel clerk, much to my surprise, they haven't hampered or impeded my typing in any way. As for co-workers, I'm sure some have noticed, but no one has said anything. At present, I plan to keep letting my nails grow, shaping, filing and buffing as I go, this has been a great deal of fun and will certainly add another dimension to my fashion freestyling when I get around to painting them for outings. I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman!
