raymond.nl
One always hopes one’s guests will be comfortable. But sometimes they don’t do themselves any favours. As the Queen greeted the first lady of Turkey yesterday, she couldn’t help an admonishing glance at her guest’s six-inch platform shoes. Hayrunnisa Gul, wife of Turkey’s president, tottered gingerly on to the red carpet as she and her husband arrived for lunch at Buckingham Palace. The Queen, in her usual sensible court shoes, appeared somewhat taken aback by her glamorous guest’s footwear. ilikekicks
Nice boots, but what good is wearing a pair of hot boots when the rest of your outfit consists of being covered in what equates to rags? pussyinboots
Nice boots, but what good is wearing a pair of hot boots when the rest of your outfit consists of being covered in what equates to rags? .....So other accepted fashions are not 'equating to rags' then...? Like young men in jeans that expose vile views of their behinds.....and 'T-shirts' with huge rips all over them....or hiding themselves behind cheap hoodies....? Likewise, girls in jeans that have more holes than cloth...mini-skirts no bigger than postage stamps.....and tops full of slits and tears? There's plenty more 'rags' on sale in high fashion shops in most US and European high street stores. As it happens, I think that her outfit looks very smart.....apart from those boots, which are inappropriate really. at9
The rest of her outfit looked modest and appropriate, though there is controversy in Turkey about the wearing of a headscarf. The boots looked cheap. They were probably expensive but they didn't look like it.
CRabbit
I'm with you at9, she didn't look too bad at all with the exception of those boots. @pussyinboots: I couldn't agree more. Current high-street fashion trends are hideous in places and the bigger fools are those that buy them. I've never bought a pair of 'ripped' jeans - they end up ripped quickly enough and then find themselves in the bin! As for hoodies and the thugs hiding inside them, I think that's a whole other debate. @ilikekicks: Perhaps a harsh judgement, though one mans rags are another's riches, or so I'm told. Gudulitooo
With these boots she managed to be the tallest of all four. Her outfit is no less smart than the queen's one, but it is unfortunate that it doesn't honor her youth in any way. When she is standing, it is a well better sight than when she is walking towards the queen. The side view look like she is going to buy vegetables on the outdoor market... HappyinHeels
I think she looked fine. QE2 would have given the visiting Turks the once over no matter how they were dressed because that's what these events are about and what fuels the British press. If she had worn granny heels then the issue would have been she was mocking QE2. Not that important in the overall scheme of things but certain conversation fodder. Platformdude
Given the cultural view of women in Islamic cultures, Mrs. Gul looked as cool as one can look under the circumstances. I like the boots as well; very clean, sleek, and of course, a suitable platform. If she can pull it off while visiting the Queen while the eyes of the hypercritical media are watching, who are the rest of us to worry about clomping around a club or shopping mall? Shafted
I pretty much agree with pussy. The boots are inappropriate for the occasion, but it's the platform that makes them so. It's looks odd. Shafted, the boots that is! Steve63130
But the real question is what kind of high heels should a MAN wear in the present of Her Majesty? Should a dude be subdued, as in boots or clogs with a 3" block heel? Perhaps a bit more pumped up with a thin heeled pump? Or on the bleeding edge with royal (what else?) blue platform stilettos and matching painted toenails? I'm concerned because you never know - she may contact me some knight to come visit her. If she wants an audience with me, I certainly want to wear the right shoe, as well as the left one, so your advice is welcome. Steve

Would that be appropriate, do you think? 'Come, and trip it as ye go On the light fantastic toe.' John Milton
ilikekicks
We are going to disagree here. .....So other accepted fashions are not 'equating to rags' then...? Correct. There are MANY other outfits those boots would look 2-3times better with. Rags are Rags. You make some correct comparisons. They are what they are. As it happens, I think that her outfit looks very smart.....apart from those boots, which are inappropriate really. One or the other would have to go. Either the boots or the outfit. They dont ' mesh ' well together in my opinion. I would say the same if she were wearing a pair of ' Ballet Pleaser ' or ' hooker/porn ' platforms. A *very conservative* outfit as the woman is wearing should have a traditional pair of courts, not platform boots from everything I have seen. REPEATEDLY ARGUMENTATIVE, INSULTING AND RUDE. Chris As you stated, theres many ' fools ' out there buying whats called ' distressed ' clothing. Clothes with holes and tears in them right off the racks/out of the boxes. Im not casting judgement, from what I have gathered, shes a great woman whom does many fond things in representing the people of her nation. I dont care for her attire in this scenario, thats all. roniheels
Inappropriate, odd, weird, unique ... I'm sorry but I have to admire the woman for wearing what she wants to wear and just being her. I don't she meant it to insult anyone. She probably really enjoys wearing shoes like those.
