To add my two cents worth (adjusted for inflation), my uneducated guess would be that women value comfort over style when it comes to footwear these days. But yeah, fashion is indeed cyclical, so heels aren’t going away.

What a fun article and series of images!
Glad you liked it. I found the article most entertaining.

I stumbled by accident on this article from Harper's Bazaar about what high heels looked like from the 1500's to the present day.
Here's what women wore in 1959, the year I was born:

The highest heels I’ve ever worn were five inchers on a pair of thigh high boots, but I haven’t worn them for at least a good two years. These days, it’s rare when I wear anything as high as four, I just don’t have the desire to go higher than that.

True True!
I was of the mindset that - if I'm going to wear high heels out and about - why not shop for high heels in a shoe store ? It ensures the best fit.
Ahh! I wish I could do that. But since I wear a size 13, precious few stores outside of Payless offer gunboats in that size.

Likewise. And, even in church, where women are supposed to dress up, all you see are sun dresses and flip flops. Discouraging when a man is wearing the highest heels in the place.
I would imagine those same women would say they've liberated themselves from wearing heels, preferring comfort over style.

Hi JeffB
I like that pic you've posted. Monochromatic high heels mixed up. Looks good.
With your styles and discernment - I reckon you could run with 2 different colours of shoes.... (just my crazy opinion anyway)
that said - 2 different colours is fun - but I must be honest and say - matching shoes is still prettier and classier - I would never mismatch shoes in any formal dress code.
Heck, it takes a titanic effort to resist the urge to make sure my bag matches my shoes, and I often fail at that. No way I could leave the house in mismatched footwear.

I wouldn't do that myself, especially on purpose. Meanwhile, here's Perfume, a highly popular Japanese pop music group doing the mismatched shoe thing:

I would say an important thing to consider would be to limit your intake of fluids, before and during your outing.
-
Well, I'm sure that must've made for quite an interesting experience. I've never worn heels on metal surfaces, but I can imagine that could make for a seriously dicey proposition, not too much different from polished tile floors in stores and malls which present their own perils for heelers like us.

Sharp shoes, nz! Those heels look to be close to five inches, and given how thin they are, I'm impressed you managed to keep them out of those gaps. I know that on those now rare occasions when I were stilettos, I have to be careful to avoid stepping in those cracks in the sidewalk.

Wow! Sharp looking outfit there! And those sandals were outstanding!

Bravo to you, Mr. X! That was a great outfit you wore! The dress looked so natural on you, and the shoes were sharp. Well done!

Whoa! Talk about a marvelous outfit, Mr. X! You sure do know how to look great in a romper! Two thumbs up!
