What is it with dictators and moustaches?  Hitler, Stalin, Franco, Saddam Hussein.  And Orwell's Big Brother is personified as a moustachioed face.  Thoughts?

Interestingly, in western culture we tend to associate moustaches with villians. This is because in the old silent movies the villain (the guy in the black hat) almost invariably had a moustache, especially in comedy (think laurel and hardy). The main reason why Charlie Chaplin had a toothbrush moustache was because he was a little bit bad...

Even as late as the 1960s villians had moustches and the complete bounders had thin moustaches like Terry Thomas, the exception to this rule was David Niven who was actually asked to shave his off to play good guys but he refused because it hid a tiny scar just above his lip.

Hitler had a toothbrush moustache because he had to trim it after nearly dying in a gas attack in the trenches (yes, the Allies used gas too) because he couldn't get a good seal around the edge of his gas mask. This is the main reason why officers lost their "mutton chops" whiskers too.

Of course there was good ole good guy Thomas Magnum PI...

This would depend on who hired him and who he was "investigating".

And Jimmy Edwards.

Because they can - - -

Hey - Obama doesn't have one - and some consider him a villian and/or dictator.......

Oh, Dick Dastardly, the perfect villain.  If he'd played fair he'd have won every time as he had the best car, rocket powered.

But the thing about moustaches is that they take deliberate shaping.  Hitler, Stalin and Franco all stood in front of a mirror getting their moustache right.

Of course, Clousseau  is the master of the moustache.

Not familiar with the other fellow, but Magnum was always the good guy

I like John Steinbeck's reasoning for growing his moustache (mentioned in the intro of Travels With Charley) - because he could. It was something a man could do that a woman could not, or if she could her success would be assured only in a circus.

Yes, he always got so far in front that he was able to set elaborate traps to stop the other racers...
