As RonC said, it is not appropriate for your stocking welts (hold ups or suspended) to show. Whats under a skirt shouldn't be on show. Having welts on display when standing/walking is no different than bending over in a mini and showing everyone your knickers, its just not appropriate.

On the other hand - showing a little welt when sitting is unavoidable at times, and it is fun to play to the gallery a little if people are looking....

Sadly, my wife always hated wearing any kind of gartered or thigh-high stockings.  She was a pantyhose girl.  She did wear gartered stockings on my request maybe a handful of times, and would complain about them falling down, etc., the whole time.  I quit asking......but I sure did enjoy it when she did those too many years ago.

  2. In reading these posts, one thing struck me.  It is, to me, very understandable that wearing heels with shorts would cause some trepidation.  That is a combination that even most women would not do.  WHile it was in style for a very brief time, women wearing heels with shorts was never a common sight.  I think most would hesitate on that look (unless they were platform wedges or something on the more clunky side - I am referring to stiletto heels now).  So even among women, that look would make one stand out from the crowd.

Beautiful red sling backs.  I love the delicate buckle!  They would exceed my capabilities height wise, but would love a pair if they came in a 4" max heel!  You have some great looking shoes, and I am impressed that you are willing to wear them out and about.  Nice!

Try again. I just went there and it told me 288 items. Here's on that you might like, size 11, in black (pink sold out - sorry), called "STUDIO". I like this myself, so next time I go to the mall I will go try this on at the steve madden store.

With an extra-thick platform sole, sky-high heel and flirty peep-toe, STUDIO is full of girly-glam attitude!  Style this statement sandal with ’70s-inspired getups to evoke the chicest divas of decades past!

    • Suede upper material
    • Man-made lining
    • Man-made sole
    • 5.5 inch heel height
    • 1.25 inch platform
    • Block heel
    • Peep toe

Personally, I'd be happier with no items found than with this pair....just not my style ...lol.

After my last ankle reconstruction, I started to search for shoes that would fit better. I came to the conclusion:

shoes are made in basically two different shapes (1) the rectangle (2) pear.

The rectangle shape is were the toe box and the heel box are the same width. Getting it wider is more uniform.  This is the typical male foot/shoe.

The pear shape is where the toe box is wider than the heel. This is the typical female foot/shoe.

I have a wide and tall toe box and narrow heel. Tall because I have a high arch, so the girth of my toe box is large compared to my heel.

I use to wear men's US 9 1/2 4E shoes just to get my foot into the shoe. Then I couldn't tie them tight enough to keep my heels from sliding around. I hated shoes and shoe shopping. I haven't worn male shoes for years now.

I now wear women's US 10 normal. My toe box is too wide for some shoes and I haven't found a pump that I can wear without pain tall toe box. Heels also help normalize my high arch and give me better balance. I now love shoes, shoe shopping, etc.

RonC to help with your wide foot, look for lace-ups.

I hear you on the lace-ups.  They do offer a better fit.  Unfortunately, I also find them less than attractive in my eye.  Haven't bought a pair yet, though I have come close a few times after trying them on and feeling the fit.  One of these days I will give them a try.

RonC,       The industry standard is to photograph and describe shoes using a size 8-8.5US ladies as that is the median size in the United States. I have noticed a gain of about 0.5-0.75" from this size to my optimal size 11. The gain in height in size 12 and 13 must be very close to the one inch you described. This is a normal part of the manufacturing process to keep the shoe slope consistent through the sizes. Just use some gel pad inserts to keep your foot from sliding forward which will add comfort and add stability. Live a little ago rock those 5" heels!   HappyinHeels

Happy, actually that was Tim0578 that made that comment - I just added that I liked his choice in heels.  I am with him though.  4" is my limit of comfort.  I've tried the gel pads.  Problem is most shoes are not really wide enough for my feet - so putting a pad in the toe box just takes up too much space, so they end up being very uncomfortable.  Ho the woes of cramming a rather wide male foot into a shoe designed for the narrower, more delicate female foot!  Boo hoo....lol

I just received new heels. They feel just fantastic, I love them. The heel is about 4 inches and it seems to be maximum for me. Last heels I bought were said to be with 10 cm heels but I noticed that in fact they are about 12 cm or 5 inches. It's too much for me.

Nice classic pumps style - and one can never go wrong with black patent!

    Fabulous!

My wife used to wear a lot of heels when she was younger, and although she still has great heels, she hardly wears them anymore.... heart-breaking!! :mecry:

She knows I love them (on her), but I guess its just easier to put on a pair of slip-slops... :(

My wife always wore great heels - mostly because I bought most of them for her...lol.  Unfortunately, about 7-8 years ago she began having foot problems.  Three different foot surgeries that didn't help, and a spinal issue as well, heels are very much a thing of the past.  Can't even wear a decent looking pair of flats or very low heels anymore.  Heart-breaking it is.....

    ROnC,

Glad to see came around to wedges. My question to you if a wedge had a floral pattern or was a wild colour or had a series of thinner straps woudl that work for you??  Mine run from more utlitarian designs and colours to more feminine styles like described above. All my wedges are 5" and up with a sole :) exception; a leopard print wedge from Target from 2007 (4.5") my wife actually got for me. I think you are still a devotee of the pump.

    HappyinHeels

Happy, I am not a big fan of the florals for some reason.  Have some a few I like, but mainly find that, to my eye, it seems to distract one from the shape of the shoes to looking at the pattern.  Goofy, I guess, but that's me!  I do like many of those with the thinner straps - personally though, I've had quite enough of the gladiator style however, that just seems like it won't go away.  And the single high ankle strap with the single tor strap is also getting a bit worn out in my eye.  In the end, however, you are mostly correct - I do tend to like pump styles more than most others.  I have in the past had a pair of these from Aerosoles, though mine were black.  I did enjoy them - easy to walk in but have the feminin touch I seek.

  10. Here is my latest purchase.  Nine West Hedonna in size 11.  Bought them at K & G Superstore for $35.99.  Tried them on in store and while the 11s are snug, I think will will give some, and they stay on my feet nicely, which has been a probelm for me as of late, especially if I go to a 12.  Heel is right at 4" in the size 11s.

AT Left is the "Brandey" wedge I got today at  the Steve Madden store in the "Bucktown" area of Chicago. Was in town for first aid training and strapped on my Call It SPring cognac wedges and went shopping. Very warm (88F/31C) in Chicago today. These new wedges are exactly 6" high and very comfortable. At first getting the straps clasped is an effort but they stretch enough to be able to slip the shoes back on the second time. They felt so inviting I wore them out of the store! Shoes like this with the "slingback" design allows one to quickly put on/take off if you're shoe shopping or trying on other things. They go for $89 but were 25% off for "Family + Friends" weekend. I do like shopping at this particular store where I am always treated very well. It doesn't hurt either their door sports a  rainbow sticker which means they are very cool with dudes looking for heels.  It STEVEMADDEN-SANDALS_BRANDEY_CAMEL-SUEDE.jpg.3bee2c1058344ce46f06ed30d045c206.jpg turned out these new wedges matched my strap watch and handbag I had with me. HappyinHeels

Hey HiH.  Is that the store on Milwaukee near North Ave?  I haven;t been there - will need to try it some time.  I'm guessing, however, that 11 is as large as they carry....sometimes I can squeeze into an 11, such as those I am about to post.

  12. Just my personal point of view, but for me, for wedges to look good, the upper has to be very feminine.  The pumps above are a great example - a very feminine cut on the upper balances the bulk of the wedge.  When the upper gets overly bulky looking i.e. thick, heavy looking straps or a very bulky looking pump style, or a wedge on a boot, the wedge style loses it's appeal for me.  For a long time a wouldn't even consider a wedge, but I have over time purchased probably four pairs - but again, I guess I would say "dainty" looking uppers to balance the heaviness of the wedge.  Just sayin'....lol.

  13. It is all what appeals to you personally.  I'm not much of a platform fan, but I will say it depends on the style of the shoes.  That said, anything over 1/2" to maybe max 1", I find unappealing.  I recall as a kid seeing a few women that likely had a leg shorter than the other, so one shoe would have a big, thick sole to make up for the short leg.  So I relate platforms with corrective shoes.  All that said, I have bought a couple of pairs with platform soles.  I have trouble walking in them, as because the sole doesn't bend, the slip off at the heel.  Again, it just depends on what you like - and you should wear what you like!

  14. At 66, about 4" is my absolute max, but I am much more comfortable, and walk much better, in 3-3.5" heels.  As is the case for most women, I'll leave the higher heels for the younder folks...
