  1. I went to Bigg’s and Sam’s tonight wearing my chap boots with an olive green turtleneck, jeans, and a black blazer. I thought the outfit looked rather nice. On my morning shops at Bigg’s, I almost have the store to myself but both stores were crowded tonight.

At Bigg’s I had to ask if there was any more of an item is stock and stand around for 5 minutes while the clerk went back to check. After that I wandered around the store without a shopping cart. I got a couple of glances but other than that no reactions at all even standing in the checkout line.

At Sam’s I wandered around with a shopping cart and again got a few glances but for the most part I was ignored. After I had gone through the checkout and was walking out, one woman saw me and gave me a look that would have cooled soup, but that happens. I even stopped for gas and no one noticed.

I’m just out as a casually dressed guy with non-traditional footwear and it seems that most people are willing to go along with that.

    Iloveboots -

“It was so cool strutting across the floor”. Come on; give the rest of the dinners a break. Simply walking across the dance floor would have been enough. ;) Sounds like another fun night out.

    Shafted -

Funny how the perception of a giggle changes with a woman’s age. Giggles from teens are just an annoyance. The one I got from the register clerk was just a delight.

  2. That look deserves a lot of loud horn tooting. I think both pictures look great. The gray turtleneck looks fine with the black skirt and it goes without saying, I like the boots. To my eye, simple is better. You might try a plain black turtleneck with the gray skirt, or even the gray turtleneck with the gray skirt. Remember you getting advice from a fashion illiterate. I shaved off my beard one time because our office secretary said, “you know, I don’t remember what you looked like without a beard.” I had no idea you would shave yours but it really does soften your image. This is not a suggestion but if I were a talking mirror I’d say the look you are presenting (especially the black skirt) is fine enough to venture out with. Where did this come from? I had no idea either of us were heading in this direction. I do have to admit though, its a fun trip.

  3. JeffB –

Don’t blame me for starting this skirt business. ;)

Both of the skirts look great. I’m not sure I like the sweater with the dark skirt but the grey combination looks awesome. One suggestion, try posing with your heels close together. It would look more like a non aggressive stand than an aggressive stance.

At least 10 years ago I quit wearing a beard after wearing one for 20 years. There were two reasons for shaving it off: 1) it had turned gray, 2) the beard didn’t look right with the style of clothing I wanted to wear. Back then I wanted to try wearing a leather skirt with boots and while not trying to appear as a female the beard pushed my appearance too far in the other direction. The whole thing just looked funny (my opinion).

The three knit skirts I bought were about a foot longer then the ones you found. I think that how conservative a skirt looks is directly proportional to its length. By the way, aren’t thrift stores great for allowing you to try new things on the cheap?

I agree with dr1819 that the look might be better with boots. With long skirt it doesn’t make any difference if they are knee high or thigh high.

My advice on going outside is to look in a mirror first. Make sure the image you see is one you are comfortable presenting. I don’t think I present quite as masculine an image as you do, especially with the beard so I was comfortable with the image I saw in the mirror and went out. As I have said before, what I am comfortable with changes.

I like your look with slacks/jeans and heels and really like the look with jeans and boots. My first impression when I saw your long skirt pictures was that the look didn’t work. The beard was too much. I tried to imagine the look without the beard and it was better but I’m still not sure. Oh well so much for my two cents worth.

  4. Last night I ran into Sam’s on the way home. I wore my black leather pull on thigh boots with 4” stilettos. As usual, no one paid any attention. When I got to the checkout I got into a queue that had a clerk I had never seen before. She didn’t notice my boots as she rang up my stuff. I walked past the end of the register counter and was in full view when one of the other clerks said, “My friend still can’t find those boots on the internet”. (This clerk, a guy, had asked me several weeks ago where I had gotten my boots and I gave him a URL).

My clerk turned to the other clerk and asked, “Boots? What boots? What are you talking about?”

The other clerk said, “My friend wants a pair of boots like his.”

My clerk looked back at me and I held my leg out a little sideways to show the heel and said, “Like these.”

The look on her face was priceless! Her eyes got as big as saucers and she gave an honest giggle. I took it as a giggle of delight rather than laughing at me. This one of the best reactions I have ever had.

This morning I had to scrape the ice of my windshield which meant it was cool enough to wear my chap boots. These are the Ellie chap boots that were advertised with a 5” heel that turned out to be 6”. The heel tip was canted out past the back of the boot which made them almost impossible to walk in. I had ½” cut off the heel and that made all the difference. There is still a big difference between my normal 5” heel and these 5 ½” heels. It made a difference in driving. I had to be sure I knew where the peddles were with that higher heel.

My morning grocery shopping in the chap boots was without event. I had some extra time so I walked the length of the store twice to get used to the extra ½” of heel. The exercise really helped.

The cashier at the checkout had seen me many times before, even in a skirt, but not with the chap boots. She greeted me with a “Hi Hon” which caught me a little off guard.

When she had finished the transaction I said, “It’s finally cool enough for there”.

I was in full view and she replied, “Well Hon, whatever it takes”.

When I left the store I still wasn’t used to being called “Hon” but … whatever it takes.

    dr1819 –

You guys are almost making me scared to wear my boots in Ohio. Between the legal system and iloveboots advice on learning to run in heels I’m not sure I want to go outside.

I do try to not be “In your face” about wearing my boots and avoid situations which seem to upset anyone so I think I will still keep at it.

    iloveboots –

Thanks for the comments on venturing out in new cities. I really like going to museums especially art museums and I have never had a problem wearing my boots to any of them.

I guess I really should practice moving quickly in heels. It might come in handy even crossing a street. Anyone that wanted to could outrun me even when I’m wearing flat shoes so winning a foot race in heels is out of the question. It did occur to me that a sharp pointy heel on a leg exercising a kick would be a deterrent but I really don’t want to find out if it is or not.

  5. since-i-can-remember

Nice first pair. They would also look good worn over your slacks. If the boots are a stretch fabric, be sure the slacks fold flat agint your leg so there aren't any lumps telegraphed through the boot fabric.

Try the boots over your slacks, look in a mirror and if you like the look you see, then, yes, you can wear them that way and no one care. Go out heeling with confidence.

  6. NikkiHH –

I couldn’t agree with you more when you said, “In my opinion wearing a skirt does put across a very different look”. I wear thigh boots and jeans a lot but changing the jeans for a skirt really does change the look. Another factor is the length of the skirt. I didn’t appreciate how much that changed things until I tried a long skirt. The shorter the skirt, the more daring the look (and that isn’t limited to guy skirt wearers).

It sounds like you really enjoyed your outing. I think if you can wear “boots and tights with denim hotpants” you can wear just about anything.

Don’t become complacent, then have a great time.

  7. JeffB -

The new boots look great with the black outfit and the beard is coming along nicely too.

I haven’t tried the PU material before. Are the boots comfortable especially after a couple of hours?

    booty lover -

Welcome to the board. Tell us a little more about the shopping trip.

  8. This morning I wore my white leather thigh boots with 5” stiletto heels on my grocery trip. I wore them with a white turtleneck, tan suede jacket and beige slacks. I chose the white boots for no better reason than I hadn’t worn them for a while.

One thing about white thigh boots is that they attract a lot more attention than the black ones do. I got a couple of wide eyed looks from people that hadn’t seen me before and the folks that disapprove of my style of dressing had a harder time ignoring me.

The register clerk this morning is not uncomfortable waiting on me, but she does disapprove of my boots. We chatted about the weather (fog was so thick I couldn’t see the store from across the parking lot) with no mention of my boots.

One down side of wearing white boots while driving is that most peddle covers will leave black marks on the boots. The concept of being careful so that doesn’t happen is not appropriate while driving. Driving demands enough attention that I can’t spare any to worry about marking my shoes/boots. Any advice on cleaning white leather would be appreciated.

    Iloveboots –

It really is great to have another person posting about wearing thigh boots in public especially someone that’s been at it as long as you have. I think all of us wearers are looking forward to learning from your experience. The pictures look great and I’m looking forward to more posts.

I have always cautioned against becoming complacent about picking places where I will go wearing my boots. I am still concerned about walking into a bad situation. I haven’t had a bad outing yet, but would like to avoid one if I can. Any advice would be appreciated.

  9. Spaulocentro -

Welcome to the board. There is lots of good advice and information here about wearing heels and boots. I think you will find that you can wear anything you want without too much concern especially in New York.

I do recommend being discrete in business meetings but away from work no one really cares. Next time your in the shoe store try on some heels.

    Have a great time.

  10. Shakala -

What a great afternoon. I have often said that the hardest step is the one you take getting out of the car.

One way to gauge how well you are doing is to look at the friends you have. It sounds like you have some good ones. I don’t know anyone in the martial arts community but I wouldn’t have thought they would have been so accepting. Ah another stereotype bites the dust. Time will tell if your friends were really Ok with you in heels of if they were just being polite. I really hope they were Ok with it.

On driving in heels, I do it all the time. Like DawnHH advises, you have to reorient yourself to the different position your foot takes in heels so take it easy at first until it become natural and second nature.

Sounds like your having a great time. Enjoy.

  11. Iloveboots -

    Again, welcome to the forum.

What an introduction you have written. I read it several times and am still in awe. My mind boggles at the image of an entire office in a sea of thighboots. I’m trying to picture the expression on the face of an unsuspecting salesperson or repairman that dropped in for a visit. I’ll bet there was even some good-natured competition among the boot wearers.

It sounds like you are blessed with a great family. You tend to get out of families whatever you put into them and it sounds like you and your wife have done well.

I am looking forward to reading about more of your boot wearing experiences and never apologize for a long post.

I upload images to Image Shack. The only tricky thing about posting an image on this board is making sure there are no spaces before or after the image’s URL inside the IMG ... /IMG markers.

  12. Great looking outfit and boots. Very conservative, I wouldn't think twice about wearing them anywhere/everywhere. I'll bet no one would even notice other than how well everything goes togeather. Thats also a nice overlook. I'll bet DawnHH can identify the locomotive.

  13. This morning I went grocery shopping wearing a tan suede jacket, olive green turtleneck, long dark gray knit skirt, and black granny boots. I noticed that several employees that knew me ignored me. One cashier was off duty, and I kind of expected her to at least say “Hi” but I know she disapproves of my wearing a skirt. The other was an on duty cashier that also doesn’t like my wearing a skirt (she isn’t too keen on thigh boots either) who continued a conversation with someone else while she rang up my sale. Oh well, some days are better than others.

A problem I have noticed with these long knit skirts is that they cling to hose. Most leather skirts have a built in lining and my other cloth skirt is knee length and made of a smooth material that does not cling. It never occurred to me that I would soon be shopping for a slip.

    Tightlevisandhhboots –

I don’t appreciate the look of the short boots with a skirt. I think the boots should be at least knee high. I get by wearing my granny boots only with a long (ankle length) skirt. With the knee length skirt I wear my thigh boots either full length or cuffed down to knee length.

    Skirted-UK -

Two months ago I never would have believed I would be participating in this conversation about experiences wearing a skirt. I’m still not sure I believe it.

  14. Today was a skirt day. I tried one of my new skirts just to see how it would go. I started with a black turtleneck and planned on wearing the long off white skirt with my granny boots. JeffB and I both thought this would be a winning combination. We were both wrong. The white and black were too much of a contrast for the look I was going after. I changed into the dark gray skirt and it looked very nice but the slit didn’t work with the granny boots. I wound up wearing the medium gray skirt that did not have a slit. The outfit did look very nice (my opinion).

I started with my normal stop at the grocery. Several folks noticed the guy in the long skirt but I got very little reaction. At the checkout the clerk was the lady who said she wished she was as thin as I was when I wore the long suede leather skirt. There were two ladies in the queue in front of me and both noticed what I was wearing. Both gave me a once over then threw me a nice smile. As I was leaving, the register clerk said, ”It was good seeing you again”.

After work I went to Sam’s. Very few people even noticed I was wearing a long skirt. The few that did raised an eyebrow or two then went on their way. I wandered around a bit then headed for the checkout. The register clerk has waited on me many times and knows me by name. I said, “I’m trying something a little different.”

She said, “Whatever makes you happy.”

I asked if this was too much different than my boots?

She said, “People are going to comment no matter what you do.”

    I said, “Surprisingly they don’t.”

    “Really?”

    “Yeah, no kidding.”

Both of the register clerks had seen me many times wearing my thigh boots and were used to seeing them. The skirt was something new and it was just like the first time they saw me in thigh boots. It will take a little getting used to.

    JeffB –

Both of the pictures we have posted are as far away from contrasting pieces in clothing as they can get. One is all red, and the other is all black. The long skirt seems to go better in a non-contrasting outfit. A shorter black leather skirt looks good when contrasted with a white shirt but the long black skirt doesn’t look good at all. It may be that there is so much material in the long skirt that the contrast is too great. I’m sure there are people that already know all this stuff, but it’s kind of fun discovering.

  15. I just realized something about my new skirts. They are a light knit fabric that is very form following, kind of like this:

    Posted Image

Any shirt I wear with these skirts will have to be worn outside the skirt. It will look awful to have the outline of a lumpy shirt tail showing throught the material.

The off white one is long enough to be able to wear with my granny boots and cover the shaft of the boots, even when I’m sitting.

    JeffB -

I was also thinking black top and black boots.

  16. At lunch I stopped by our local Goodwill (thrift store). I found they were having a 50% off everything sale. I spotted a long straight dark gray knit skirt that has a side slit that goes up to the knee. I tried it on and decided it would look good. They also had a similar skirt without the slit in light gray and off white. I now have 3 new (still with the manufacturer’s label) skirts and I’m only $6 poorer.

  17. This morning I had to stop at a bank before my grocery stop. I had been to both places before but this is not the same bank as my last post where I knew the teller. I wore a long sleeved white dress shirt, a long black jacket style sweater, black leather thigh boots with 5” stiletto heels, and a long black cloth skirt with a slit in front of my left leg that went up just past my knee. If I tool a long stride, the full length of my left boot was visible. I tried to walk a little more dignified than that. There was a lot of black and white in the outfit and it could have used a bit of color but overall the look was conservative. The teller at the bank appeared to be uncomfortable with a guy in a skirt. She was courteous but her remarks were as short as possible. I had been there before with boots and jeans and the same teller chatted away with me. At the grocery, I wound up in a line at the checkout. The lady in front of me saw I only had two items and offered to let me go ahead. She didn’t seem bothered at all by my appearance. The register clerk really didn’t approve but commented that “doing what I liked is what’s important”. None of the other ladies in the line seemed to be bothered but maybe they were just sure I was going to go away. Not a super outing but fun anyway. I’m still working on how I decide whether to wear a skirt or not. Sometimes it feels like just a natural thing to do but other times it doesn’t feel right at all. Insights from others would be welcomed.

  18. Shafted

Thanks for the update. The security guards went through the pack when I walked in the museum. I still don’t see how it made a difference if I wore the pack over one shoulder or both shoulders. Whatever, I was there to look at the paintings not to argue with the guards. They were happy with pack on one shoulder and I had a great time looking at the art while wearing a flat heeled pair of thigh boots.

  19. Iloveboots -

Welcome to the forum. We would love to read about some of you experiences over the past 15 years.

    How did you get started?

The kind of boots do you wear?

Where do you go in your boots?

Again welcome, and we are looking forward to hearing from you.

    JeffB -

Standing in front of that white heater really makes the boots stand out in the picture. Nice compositional touch.

  20. I have finally settled in on the idea that you have to be comfortable with the image you want to present. The first step in being comfortable with an image is liking the look yourself. From your post it appears that you really like the look, as do most of the members of this board. I think it looks great. I really like my appearance with thigh boots and jeans and wear the combination without a second thought but I don’t like the look with the same boots and slacks. I think it’s because the slacks are looser and interrupt the line of the boot on my leg. I also am finding that my likes and dislikes change with experience. I didn’t like the look of a long skirt at first, now I really do. I keep saying this is a head game. There are some days when I think a skirt looks good and other days when I don’t like the look as much.

  21. I have been using a black leather “kangaroo-style belt-bag” on and off for several years. I keep my keys, wallet, and change in the pouch and hang my cell phone on the strap. Most of the time I carry it over my shoulder like a purse because I never liked the look of wearing one. I did this long before I started experimenting wearing a skirt. It’s a little more trouble than pockets but its a lot more comfortable then sitting on a wallet. I have started using this bag again when I go out with pants or a skirt. On my last trip, I used a black leather backpack style purse. This can also be carried on one shoulder and looks sharp. There was plenty of room for keys, wallet, cell phone, and sketchbook. I haven’t understood why, but the guards at the National Gallery in D.C wanted me to carry the pack on one shoulder rather than as a backpack.

  22. JeffB the jacket and boots do look good together. The outfit has a nice balance with the light jeans. Lingering looks and double takes are all part of the fun and giggles from young girls are an annoyance to be tolerated. I would take someone’s wife whispering “Damn” as a complement. Sounds like you had a great time. You are going to have to try your 8899s sometime.

  23. I was just reading the High Heel Addiction thread and saw where a number of board posters say they have many pair of thigh boots.

crotchboots-m - “I have 80 plus pairs..most are black leather thigh high or taller with 3 to 5 inch heels”

midthigh - “I own a pair of white leather, red corset, black leather, purple leather and my favorites, brown suede and brown leather”

You folks really ought to try wearing them out and about. Once you get out of the car (which is the hardest step) wearing thigh boots can be great fun.

  24. JeffB, I just realized I hadn’t posted my hardiest congratulations on your five-year anniversary.

Having an employer that will let you wear heels at work and doing it are two different things. I admire your efforts and thoroughly enjoy reading your posts.

Five years ago, did you think heeling would be this much fun? ;)

    dutch-bootboy -

I’m looking forward to hearing about your first steps outside in stilettos.

    DawnHH -

I didn't realize Mickey had a surgery. Glad to here things are going well. You should be on your best behavior, now that Mickey has a longer reach with a cane.

I think I should translate for the rest of the board, “seeing all of the new merchandise and decorations” means going out to look at trains.

    Enjoy your outings.
