  2. I hadn’t realised how much higher my heels were, in absolute terms, with my size 45/46 boots, but of course that makes sense - so you with you size 37 and @mlroseplant with his 39/40 and me with my size are all talking about roughly the same thing in terms of angle, proportions and degrees of difficulty. It makes for a useful shorthand 12cm is 12cm for all of us
  3. Before my times here on hhplace I never even measured my heels. Still I got in contact with the "heel height in standard size", because all manufacturers claim a certain heel height which doesn't seem to change with the shoe size. It's very prominent on some Louboutin models where it's even a part of the name (like Pigalle 120 or Hot Chick 130). Then after our discussions here I started measuring some of my heels (size 37) and found out they're a little bit below of what the manufacturer claims. So over all the years I didn't even know my personal heel height but got a good feeling for the "heel height in standard size" 😀 What does TH stand for? In my mind I also always subtract the platform height. Sure, a huge platform can make it more difficult to walk on uneven ground but for the steepness it's irrelevant.
  4. They look great, rugged heels that work in most any terrain/occasion
  5. Yeah, I've pretty much quit caring about absolute heel height these days, and tend to focus on TH, as you call it. Having said that, I actually own at least two pair of 15 cm heels (I'd have to look), and several 14 cm, but they all have giant platforms, so that doesn't really count for me as much as it used to. One thing about giant platforms is they do make you considerably taller than a single sole of the same height.
  6. Well, shut my mouth! That's a new one on me. I've never had the heel actually measure higher than advertised. Had the opposite plenty of times. What exactly is the problem with wearing jeans? Hem length?
  7. Nice sandals there. I think we are down to mere weeks until I can wear my sandals again without looking super strange (too late for that, I know). My personal wedge collection is down to 10, and I don't have any that I would call high. I've still got a couple of giant platforms left, but my sensibilities have changed. I either wear low heels, like the pair pictured below (a throwback to the old drain pipe days!), or I tend to choose wedges with relatively narrow heels. I should probably look for some more like these black ones. I am down to my last pair in this style. They don't last forever.
  8. Get with it HinH. 😁 I wear my knee highs over my pants all the time too. Today it was my black faux suede Jessica Simpson knee highs over my size 8 jeans. The JS knee highs are black faux suede with 4 inch TH heels. @mlroseplant My new unit of measure, using measuring instruments is TH which is heel height minus platform.

  10. All, A few more pics of me in wedge sandals. Top is a hybrid look of a man’s polo shirt with cuffed skinny jeans a nice shopping outfit or just going out in the evening. The second is shorts with a regular tee shirt. I did wear this to a picnic where I was invited and encouraged to wear my heels. The point is to enjoy what you’ve bought. They’re not tree ornaments. HinH Here’s I am in cuffed skinny jeans with my 9W “Leggy” sling back wedges which have 5.5”/16cm heels. I have worn these wedges many times with skinny jeans and bootcut jeans as well as with shorts and dresses. Have also taken them on trips more often than not.
  11. Thank you @HappyinHeels Yes I like wearing my boots over my jeans. I’ve always liked the classic style boots - both stilettos and chunky heels. Clean lines and simple styling and worn with jeans. For a guy who likes to wear heels, my tastes are really rather conservative.
  12. Hey all. Got these platform sandals from, of all places, the Walmart website which could be useful for larger sizes. Chose a neutral color for more outfit flexibility. What surprised me was the advertised 5.9”/15 cm heel height, typically measured in size 8/EU 38, actually measured 8.0”/20cm!! That rules out wearing with jeans for day trips or maybe to a picnic. They do however do look fine with a dress or skirt. This is not a brand I was previously familiar with. Just be alert certain brands may be higher than you were led to believe. These sandals appear to be sturdy and well-made.
  13. Shyheels, Saw all the chatter then saw the photo of your knee high boots. They certainly look nice and I would consider something like this. I’ve never worn boots tucked into jeans like this rather have worn knee high boots with dresses. These look great on you. I don’t have flat sole boots like these but the overall look of your boots is classic indeed. HinH
  14. My sweater dresses are very short, so I wear them like a tunic. That's why my wife allows me to wear them out and about, however if I wore a midi or maxi length she would not be happy with what I'm wearing. Happy Heeling, bluejay
  15. I have always felt that given a certain actual heel height, it is much easier to walk in them with larger feet.

My next house will have radian heat system and be solar powered. I'll keep the house around 72 then. But my current heater is a old wall heater in the back of the house; extremely inefficient.
  17. Yes we are indeed a unique little group - true aficionados of high heel fashion who know and care about the details. I like that. It’s nice to be in such company.
  18. We are like the only 6 people on the planet who care about such things. Even my fashionista people don't understand how trigonometry relates to high heels. Few, if any, have any concept of the height of the heels they wear or don't wear. Until very recently, I just used the actual heel measurement in our conversation here. I figured my size 40 was close enough--and it probably is for 99.9% of the people in the world. For this challenge, however, actual steepness actually matters, so I changed my way of stating it, in order to have and apples to apples comparison. I can remember a former member here, years ago, saying he'd spent the entire day in 4 inch heels. Pretty impressive until you actually saw the shoes. In his size, they were almost like kitten heels!
  19. Yeah, it's pretty tough going out there these days if you can't find something vintage. I'm glad you managed to find something that works, and isn't completely offensive.
  20. As I work in the construction industry, and I don't necessarily have a fixed place of employment, I rely upon my car to get me to work. Sometimes that work has been pretty far away from my house, but in the last decade or so, I could count on putting about 15,000 miles a year on my car. However, since purchasing my Yamaha Majesty maxi-scooter, that number has been cut in half. Yeah, I actually ride mine, it's not a toy.
  21. Yeah, if I lived alone, I'd probably do the same. But instead, I married a Vietnamese lady. She likes it considerably warmer in the house. When we were first married, she felt awfully guilty about how much the (natural) gas bill was in the winter, so she tried to make up for it in the summer. I'd come home from working in the 95º sun all day, and the house was 85º! We'd just installed a brand new air conditioner, but she refused to use it. Of course, this was long before I started wasting a lot of money on shoes. That changed everything.
  22. The position in much of the rural UK is very similar, albeit on a smaller scale. The big difference is the fuel price, although lower here now than recently. You are paying about 46p per litre; we currently pay (for unleaded petrol) around £1.30/litre - or almost three times as much. (Diesel is typically about 9-10p/litre dearer in UK.)
  23. A tougher drive to Morocco though! 🙂
  24. There is no way I could live without a car. We live down a peninsula that is 12 miles long, then must go over a big bridge, then cross an island, and then cross a causeway, then traverse most of that second island before we get to our house. We do have electricity, phone and internet, but it all ends a half-mile from our house. As isolated as we are we have to check Amazon or other outlets first to see if they will even deliver here because about 2/3 will not. For others we can get what we want shipped, but there is an extra cost to do so. For local services, its not too bad. We got a take-out place that is open Wednesday-Sunday so we can get food, but also a gas station, and building supply hardware store. So in building my house, it’s a three mile trip for most supplies, and they can deliver it within the hour if I cannot pick it up using my car. But they are expensive. A lot of times we just wait until we are “going into town” and hit the bigger box stores while there. I like to support local businesses, but hate being gouged. It is well known that the local grocer charges 25% more just because they can. But “going into town” whether it is to Lowes or Walmart is an hour and a half drive for us… ONE WAY. But much of this island is a preserve so there are lots of hiking trails here, and on other islands. Being winter, few people walk the roads but that picks up in the summer. There are plenty of signs warning motorists of bikers and walkers, but it really is not a huge deal. The roads along the island are treacherous anyway, but there is just a slower pace of life here. No one is in a rush for anything once you cross the bridge. Edited to say: Our island has about 500 people, but 2/3 are summer residents only. Some towns on the mainland though have as little as 60, 39 and even 6 people in them. So when I say we drive 1.5 hours, that is through forest so we are driving at 60 mph. These bigger towns are 80 miles away! Fun fact though: we live closer to Africa than anyone else in the United States. It is the same distance for us to go to Morocco as it would be for us to go to California (2,900 miles).
  25. Last week
  26. Yes the heel height all seem to be based on a size 38.
  27. Yes, understood. A standardisation that helps comparison - provided we all understand and adopt the same standard, which mlroseplant takes as being the actual height of a Eu38 shoe heel. As good as anything. I expect the shoes I pictured above were sold as being 5", which they probably were in size 38.

I keep my heater on 60 F, off at night (old heater very old uninsulated house) and I will wear my sweater dress to keep warm.
