  1. Assuming it's a PC running Windows 2000, XP, (or heaven help us) Vista: If the problem is slow auto-repeat then: START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>KEYBOARD There are setting for repeat delayand repeat rate. Fine tune to suit. If the problem is overall slow response to keystrokes then it's a bit more complicated. Could be unwanted tasks running. Could be virus or malware problems. Start with CTRL-ALT_DELETE to bring up the task list, go to the "processes" tab and see whch ones are taking lots of CPU time. Then I start to get out of my depth - others will know rather more Most unlikely to be the keybaord itself though if you have (or can borrow) a spare there's no harm in trying.

  2. I've been following this thread and wondering what the fuss was about. I was hesitant to say anything but now Amanda has written with good sense I've looked back too and have to agree with her. I can't say I actually like those kind of OTT TV pictures but equally I can't see anything to frighten the horses. Unlike some blatant examples that I've had the misfortune to see before the mods got to them. I'm glad to say that somebody who recently posted some very explicit pictures was banned PDQ.

Perhaps the OP has posted some dubious pictures previously that have needed attention from the mods and these are being conflated with the ones in this thread?

  3. Can't remember the Amazon packaging but I'm pretty sure it was discreet. I bought a pair of Hush Puppies ankle boots with wedge heel, about 2.75", that I wear anywhere. Unfortunately not available any more. My Next ankle boots came from the local store during the sales. The shoe department is pretty chaotic at sale time. Just pile in and find the pair you want and if you are lucky your size will even be close to where it says it will be.

  4. Why buy from the US for something as standard as this? Next have decent ankle boots that go up to size EU43. I have a pair (43 wide fit) and they seem to run a touch big. Got them in the January sales last year for £20. Evans probably have this sort of thing - I've not bought there but others say they run quite big. Amazon UK is also worth a look. For example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hush-Puppies-H23504000-Ladies-Integrity/dp/B000TZLBX6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1228169899&sr=1-5

  5. So, in the UK, you can put your "boots" in the "boot", and drive to "Boots"??

I suppose that beats putting your boots in the trunk and driving to Walgreens. Whether thay have high heels or not.

Old joke (should have been pensioned off years ago.)

Man goes into pharmacy and asks: "Do you have any rat poison?"

Pharmacist says: "Sorry, no. Have you tried Boots?"

Man: "I want to poison them, not kick them to death!"

  6. This side of the pond we say "mains powered". Over there you say "line powered". We say "earthed", you say "grounded" etc etc. Many years ago, I saw a cartoon of a chicken farm. Outside the shed was a big switch marked "Battery" and "Mains". I went down to Battery Park in Manhattan and was disappointed not to see even a single AA cell:smile: We may be two nations divided by a common language (Shaw?) but at least some of our words for footwear are the same so we can discuss our main interest without too much trouble. Trainers = Sneakers Court shoes = Pumps Mules = Slides Any more? A final thought. Over here, "Boots" is a well known chain of pharmacies. Gives rise to all sorts of jokes which are totally incomprehensible to our friends across the sea.

  7. Like Tech, I feel that a muddy field is an excellent place not to wear pumps but to each his own. Certainly shows that HH can be worn to any event. The whole idea of camouflage is that it shouldn't be seen:smile:

  8. In the UK you want to use Methylated spirit (purple coloured) NOT WHITE SPIRIT as its a great cleaner & evaporates quickly so doesn't sit on the surface potentially damaging it like white spirit or alcohol based cleaners might.

I have no doubt that Lee's advice is correct but Methylated Spirit is alchohol based. It's about 90% ethanol, 5% methanol (makes you go blind), 5% water with a dash of purple dye and a tiny amount of pyridine to make it smell nasty.

  9. If it's leather and you use a dye designed for leather then it soaks in and so can't rub off. Dyes for synthetics are a surface coating which has to cover the old colour and isn't as durable. I learnt all this from the real experts in this forum and thank them for their advice. When I did my boots recently it was amazing to see how the leather sucked the dye into itself. I did a second application on a few areas that I hadn't done properly the first time. My only gripe is that the nice leather smell goes and is replaced by a strange odour. Not too objectionable and it wears off.

  10. Not quite what you want to do but it works..... For each image that you display in the main box there's a link "View full size image" just below it. This opens a new window with that image. This image can be saved by right clicking the image and saving the file. Or by mousing over the top left corner of the image until a menu bar appears which includes a save icon. Works in IE6, no reason why it shouldn't in Firefox though details may differ.

  11. I once saw the black leather version in Selfridges and thought it was the most perfect boot I'd ever seen. The whole upper is made from a single piece of leather - no seams at all. I still wouldn't spend £700 of my own money on them, even if I could find them in size EU43. But I would be very tempted.

  12. Lee, thanks for the info. Woolworths have the dye locally for £3.45 so that's not too bad. The ankle boots I want to dye are ordinary leather, they only shine if they are well polished:smile: . Am I right to clean them carefully with meths (or isopropyl alchohol) before dyeing? Or is it better to use detergent and water and then allow them to dry thoroughly.

  13. I saw this Punch dye in a local shop. (Ebay URL given only for reference - I have no connection with them - just needed a picture)

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PUNCH-BLACK-LEATHER-SHOE-DYE-50-MLrenew-old-shoes-boots_W0QQitemZ370090965431QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item370090965431&_trkparms=72%3A1295%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Does anyone know if it's water or spirit based? Says it's for leather only so I'm guessing spirit based which is what I want. Just looking for confirmation before I make a mess of the job.
