  1. I'm sure there was a similar thread on this recently but I can't find it. I saw a woman on a train near Amsterdam recently who had just one leg. The other leg ended in a very nice high heeled sandal, about 3". Using crutches she moved easily off the train, down a crowded staircase and walked about half a mile. All done faster than many people with 2 legs. She was smartly dressed too. An excellent example of how to live normally despite a significant disability.

  2. Probably the theremin. Not a widely known instrument, but if you've heard the typical spooky electronic music played in low-budget horror and sci-fi movies from the 30s-50s, that would be a theremin. The unique thing about it is you don't touch it; you play it by moving your hands near it. It's probably the oldest form of electronic music, invented in the 1920s. I remember reading an article about the restoration of an original one (I restore antique radios), so it would be very cool to find an original one made by RCA. If not, there are modern ones too. I have no idea what I would play on it, but just trying it out would be fun.

    One day a guy I know brought his theremin to a gathering and many of us had a go. He could play it pretty well but the rest of us just frightened the cat:smile: It's an extraordinarily difficult instrument to play well because there is absolutely no touch feedback. It was still fun to try.

  3. Design is excellent. It does push stuff down the page so maybe a just a touch smaller? Possibly also bring the headline "HHplace the HH community" down a bit so that it runs along the centre line of the logo. At the moment there's a bit of a blank space that doesn't quite look right. Why not use the logo twice. At the left and the right. Alternatively put the logo in the middle and split and split the headline each side of it.

  4. Some Artex contains asbestos. Unless you're sure that it's more recent stuff which doesn't I would strongly suggested that you use wet or steam methods to strip it. However you do it, you have my sympathy. The worst I've had to deal with is lots of woodchip wallpaper.

  5. Years ago, this was a pretty rundown area of town. I don't know what it's like now, ...

    Certainly used to be a very rough part of London years ago. There are still some council estates round there (= project housing in the USA) but most of the area has been cleaned up, certainly going north to the river is all OK now. There are a lot of interesting places within half a mile, such as Tate Modern, Vinopolis, HMS Belfast, The London Dungeon and plenty more. Mostly along the river.

    Just sorry I can't join all of you as I'm otherwise committed all weekend.

  6. ...But only from the US. If calling from any other country you will need to dial the appropriate international code for the UK.

    the number is: ++845 116 3000

    The country code for the UK is always 44 so +44 845 116 3000. Also, 0845 numbers cannot always be called from outside the the UK and you may be charged a higher rate than for normal numbers. The UK has several of these scam covert premium rate codes (0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 070xxxxx) where there is revenue shared with the recipient. See http://www.saynoto0870.com

  7. Simple calculation. Take a very slim heel, 0.25" square. Area is 0.0625 sq inches. Multiply by 2240 (pounds in a long ton) and you get 140. Anyone weighing over that could easily pierce the floor just by putting all their weight on one heel. That's just the static load. The dynamic load while walking could be even higher.

  8. Here are some numbers. They are based on road deaths as a fraction of total population. The numbers in the table are road deaths per 100,000 of population.

    My hunch about the UK being pretty good seems to be right but I think I owe Belgium an apology. Just look at Portugal!

    The USA figures by state are interesting too. NY comes out pretty well, despite the hairy driving in NYC.

  9. No place on planet Earth is more dangerous than the US highway!

    ISTR that US roads are in the middle of the league for death. UK is one of the better places with only the Scandinavians doing any better. In Europe, Belgium is usually reckoned as pretty bad. I hate to speculate about road deaths in the Middle East. Israeli taxi drivers all believe they are auditioning for a charioteers part in Ben Hur and it can't be any better in Egypt etc.

  10. I'm not doing much that weekend, but I don't fancy London just before Christmas (humans are fine .... just not that many of them ! ). If I'm feeling masochistic, I might make the trek.

    I don't blame you. Central London and other popular areas such as Camden can get a bit too busy just before Christmas.

    Kent, London has no shortage of interesting places. Buy of copy of Time Out for all the listings. It's guide to museums isn't comprehensive but there's everything from the huge national collections (British M, V&A, Science M, Natural History M) through smaller specialist places such as the newly re-opened Museum of Childhood, the Geffrye Museum, the Kew Bridge Steam Museum and many more than I could list here. And the excellent Museum of London. There's all sorts of interesting stuff along the south bank of the the Thames from Tower Bridge to County Hall. Have a great stay in London.
