Shyheels Posted April 9, 2017 Author Posted April 9, 2017 (edited) The hell wth my reading of it, that was Orwell's writing of it. The insidious and disguised inequality in the communist political system was one of the main themes in Animal Farm. Edited April 9, 2017 by Shyheels
meganiwish Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Of course, Communism is a political belief, not a political system. It's probably fairer to read Animal Farm as an exploration of the nature of human political relations. It's true that Orwell was opposed to Stalin's Soviet Union, but there's nothing to suggest that he thought the West was engaged in anything different from insidious and disguised inequality. The thrust of 1984 is that unequal equality if fundamental to human society. O'Brien is no freer than Winston, and knows it, but he has de facto power over him. That's the point of Doublethink.
Shyheels Posted April 10, 2017 Author Posted April 10, 2017 (edited) Drifting a little here. The point is equality, and as things stand in the matter of clothing choices, dress codes and colour options they just are not equal, nor are there any practical avenues open to men by which they can even hope to change things. I was reading an article in the Guardian the other day about how fashion is the "most universal form of self expression" - and naturally it was all about the rich freedoms that are there for women to explore. How nice for them. The range of male self-expression along these same lines - the clothes they wear - is sharply limited and confined to drab earth tones or navy blue, or black. And there is no recourse for change. Tell me what's fair or right about that? Or do you believe - and this would be really sexist - that males do not have the range of personality, humanity and expression that requires any greater palette? Edited April 10, 2017 by Shyheels

You rock. Yes, indeed, a bit of fun - and good on them. But that's also a bit like pointing to various fun runners in marathons and saying, see, men can wear gorilla suits, heels, nurses outfits, deep sea diving suits, anything they please...what's the fuss? Rather ingenuous. The real world clothing options and colour choices for men are very, very limited.
meganiwish Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 (edited) There's more honesty in ingenuousness than the dis variety. Good to see they all wore ties. Edited April 13, 2017 by meganiwish Wine taken
Shyheels Posted April 13, 2017 Author Posted April 13, 2017 Line ball, I'd say on the honesty front. Yes, they'd have been far too casual without their ties....
HappyinHeels Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 We have crappy journalism in the USA and Britain has their famous tabloids. If you don't like the paper's content then use it to catch bird droppings or oil drippings from your car at least it is serving some useful purpose. Don't waste any meaningful effort over something you cannot control or which has zero effect on you. If enough people don't buy the paper it will fold for lack of customers just like any other business in the private sector. HappyinHeels
