Going out for the first time

Will be going out tonight for the first time in 5'' heels with 1" platform. Very chuncky boots. Will wear them under black leather cargo pants and jacket. My heart is pounding, but it is finally time.

Just wishing you the best of luck, verngentleheels. Oh, and please tell us how you got on with them!

Obsessed is such a strong word. I prefer to think of myself as "differently enthusiastic"

Where will this happen? Please let us know how it went. Everyone here is interested.

Sorry for the delay in replying - it went great. I was in Sacramento California. Left my hotel and walked about a block to Arden Fair, a huge mall. Was rather nervous as I entered, but walked the length twice. Window shopped and tried to watch for any strange reactions in the reflections. Nobody looked twice but I was so excited! Had to remember to slow down and take small steps. Then went to dinner at a trendy restaurent (California Cafe appropriately enough). Hostess led me through the whole restauarent and sat me without a second glance. After dinner and a couple of glasses of wine I felt so bold that I went to the bar at the hotel. I now know I can go anywhere within reason. Whee!!!

I know the area. It's near Cal Expo. I went to the gun shows there until the end of 1991. Driving 270 miles was getting to be extremely tiring so I stopped doing it. It's interesting that you picked Sacto for your first outing. Perhaps the place has grown up since I was last there but it used to be very redneck in comparison with the cities nearer to the coast.

I find that if I walk through a shopping mall with longish trousers half-covering my heels, I get a few stares suggesting "What's he hiding that we can't quite see", especially if I look a bit furtive and embarrassed. But after our Last UK Heel-Meet (where Firefox and Xaphod were strutting their stuff in broad daylight with exposed 4.5" and 5" heels), this gave me the confidence to have all of my trousers shortened to a length 1" ABOVE the tops of my highest heels. Yesterday, I wore my black leather ankle boots with 5" 'vane' heels (Vanes look broad and chunky from the side view, but taper down to a thin stiletto-width from the back view). In broad daylight, with greatly shortened trousers to give a FULL view of my 5" heels, I boldly and confidently strode the full length of each of the floors of the mall, often passing right in front of seated people. Sure enough NO-ONE EVEN NOTICED OR PAID THE SLIGHTEST ATTENTION. This shows that the more you look and act ashamed, and tried to hide your heels away, the more people instictively sense your furtiveness and get suspicious and start looking for something odd. But if you act with complete confidence and pride as if your heels are the latest fashion and are there to be seen in full, then there is not the slightest problem! And it is SUCH FUN to wear your shoes in a proud, open way, and to rotate your collection each time you step out. I recommend this open, matter-of-fact approach to everyone! Cheerfully yours, Heelfan _________________

You are so lucky to have a significant other that is the same size as you, so you can swap shoes around. Sometimes my wife would love to be the same size as me (much better...me the same size as HER). I know how tough it can be overcoming such obstacles, but it can be done!

I love sharing my story when I can, so here you go for some enjoyment:

Three years ago I was mainly wearing my trousers above the heels. Now I'm wearing them an inch below the heel sumit which I think is a very appealing look with trouseres. It's kind of following some prevailing fashion trends, but nothing too extreme either way.

Hunting around for the 'first time out' thread, this seems to be the current one without gate-crashing Scotties' own enthusiastic one. I have a few outings to report. Now it slightly depends how you define 'first time out' and what counts but I'll exclude [1] furtive sneaking 20-30yds out of the front door at the dead of night and a dash back again, [2] the access I had at weekends to a small factory in the 80s which had more space than the house to walk about (and one incident of near discovery) and [3] use years ago of my male design 3" block heels. First out was a couple of weeks ago in a pair of sz UK9 slip-on loafers with a rubber block heel just short of 3" true lift in the small hours. The objective was not to brave being in public but to walk a significant distance and access how well I was walking so I would be more confident later. I picked a route through the ill-lit backstreets for a good 20minutes or more. Only crossing one of the main roads lit like daylight were a group of four drunken revellers who had no interest in me. The main lesson was [1] the loafers were rather too big and the insole I had fitted was quite useless, [2] I learnt what ball-burn is and [3] I was walking just fine. A couple of nights later after finding a stiffer insole and a stick on heel-grip thing was second time out. I tried a route in the opposite direction this time down towards the library and similar overall distance. Again very late after the buses and tubes had long shut down and towards the library someone was milling around outside. Thought it was a young chap at first but actually a nice looking girl and while rounding the corner to retrace my route along the main road she approached and came up to me. Shock, panic, I didn't have very long trousers, will she notice.....?? She wanted 20p to phone for a cab... I had only put a single one pound coin in my pocket which I had no option to offer her under the circumstances... and which she declined saying she couldn't take a pound for a phone call. She didn't notice or stare... I survived!! I then boldly walked up the highly lit main road and delayed turning off to the back streets to go past the noisy music pub with people still departing and hanging around outside. I passed through them without notice. The fix on the insoles and the heel grip were both a reasonable success. Next main outing was trip around town (=beer, pasta and retail therapy at Camden Market) with Firefox wearing some Pod lace up sz9 loafers with a 1" thick sole and a 3" big rubber heel. Only a 2" rise but quite enough for a full day out at this stage of ankle strength. Again they are somewhat large and required full socks and, on cue, the day was like summer and I was shod for February and ill-equipped for trying things on at Camden. Lesson - although still self-conscious on the tube and going up escalators, a great confidence boost being out for the day with someone else. What was that cat-call... ....Meatloaf???? I'm now using the Pod loafers freely around the neighbourhood doing errands around the local shops although I am still avoiding walking past the car mechanics workshop just across the alley 30yds from me, I take an alternative route instead. For those following the 'Bending the shank' thread in the Mod/Repair forum, I've also been out in those (now) 2.75" heel ankle boots on a couple of short walks locally but they need more 'work' on them before they are suitable longer usage. These are not as silent as the rubber heels and have slight heel click. They are a slender block heel too but seem to attract little interest. Finally, this week I needed some boot fit jeans, and clearly there was no point doing this without having the shoes on to match the fit to. So it was on with the trusty 3" Pods again and down to Gap who have an extensive range of boot-fit and slight flares right now (at a price!). There I spent a lot of time getting the right size, fit and length - trying some 5-6 pairs on. Two assistants alternated help and it couldn't have been clearer that I was trying to get the jeans just right to go with the heels although I admit they are very 'safe-looking'. My parting comment was 'now ready for some more adventurous footwear'... A black shirt... some near black jeans... do I sense a slight change of style coming on??? end of essay!!! /I

Sounds like you got the right approach. Always wear the shoes you plan on wearing with pants when you actually go and buy the pants. This is one of those things not to compromise on. I have found it strange how pants that look really well with one shoe, just don't work with another one, even when they are similar height. Guess it is just a matter of matching styles, height of the instep etc.

If you do go for some new and "adventurous" footware, you really need to try them onbefore you pay for them to be sure you get your correct size. I really don't like to have to modify a pair of shoes to make them fit. Something about the fact that no matter how hard you try, they don't really feel the same as they would if they hadn't been modified. Pwerhaps is physiological, or something.

Being mentally comfortable in your own mind is the key to wearing heels in public.

See my rant elsewhere... :(

Ionic's Rant on foot size

I just wore the one 3" pair I was comfortable out in with the heel exposed out on the shopping trip. I have a couple of pairs one more flared than the other, gives plenty of flexibility. The surprising triumph was the waist measurement... :( ...I've spent the last few years clearing out the last of any remaining no hope 34" waist trousers!! The 4-5kgs weight lost this summer must be paying off, through I suspect it is more likely flattery by generous sizing at Gap :(

Near identical styles were inconsistent with their leg lengths too, they are not like M&S where you pick your same size straight off the rail year after year without a second thought.

It's funny hearing about a first out in Sacramento - that's where I first "outed" as well. However, it was 2am, and I outed all of about three feet outside my apartment door... That was many years ago! The first time I wore heels in public view, was in Vegas, in 1999. I didn't want to try and pass, but the only way I could get myself to wear heels in public was as a witch during Halloween. The makeup was great - when he looked at my driver's license the bouncer's comment at C2 in the Venetian said, "no way! This is NOT you!" A deep, throaty, male, "who do you think it is then, buddy?" changed his mind. (I think C2 has since been remodeled into La Scena...). So, I danced the night away in three-and-a-half-inch ankle-strap heels as a very sexy (not a hag!) and curvy witch, thanks to a couple water ballons, a bra, and a second-hand long-sleeved black velvet dress. The second time I actually wore them as a guy - and I've worn heels as a guy every since. My cover story was that I'd lost a bet with my girlfriend, and had to wear a pair to a local bar, show the bartender (bartenderess, actually), and wear them for an hour while having a beer or two and playing video poker. As it turned out, I had about four beers (and 1am) before I got up enough nerve to switch from sneakers to heels and walk back into the casino. No one batted an eyelash as I walked through the casino floor wearing a pair of 3-inch heeled two-strap pewter mules. That it was summer (sangle-wearing guys are quite common, here) and I was wearing long jeans that covered all but the last inch and a half of the heels probably had a lot to do with - as much as the fact that most people's eyes were glued to either the slots or the tables. I actually sat on a stool at the bar for twenty minutes before one of the server girls actually noticed, caught my eyes and smiled. I merely shrugged my shoulders helplessly. But it wasn't over... After talking with the bartender(ess) for a while, I mentioned the "bet," and she asked, "so what did you do?" I pulled off one of the heels, put it on the bar and said, "I'm upholding my part of the bargain!" She laughed and said, "I'd say that deserves a free one... here you go" and handed me another beer. I slipped the heel back on and played video blackjack for another couple of hours before going home. The only time anyone really did notice was when I had to go to the bathroom. The floors leading into and inside the bathroom are tile, the lights are a lot brighter than they are on the floor of the casino, and the heels I was wearing had those incredibly annoying plastic heels - which turns men's head towards the sound like moths to stadium lights - and that's when they see the heels, then follow the leg up to see what the rest of the package looks like (and why it's walking into the men's bathroom). Needless to say, the result is why the term "genderf***" was invented. For a while I only wore heels only in dark places (bars / dance clubs), and only after fortifying my will with drink. Fortunately, after a long, long time, I finally realized that so long as I'm fairly conservative (wearing a beard, a mini-skirt, and 6inch spikes is not conservative), either no one cares, or they at least have enough respect to curb their tongue. So, I hope the preceeding was enough to encourage you not to turn to drink or try to hide behind either over-masculinity or over-feminization (trying to "pass") just to wear heels. Instead, pick some fairly decent clothes that you would normally wear out on the town, then find some heels that conservatively match those clothes, and go have a good time! After a while you'll come to be as comfortable as the rest of us are - but without all the crazy gyrations.

Today was a visit to the dentist, a back tooth disintegrated the other day, no time for treatment but a big programme is ahead of me in November :(

Since this was just off the King's Road, on leaving the practise rooms it was round the corner to lean on a tree in Royal Avenue and off with the sandals and on with my cheapo £5 charity shop 3" ankle boots ~ it had started to chuck with rain so quite appropriate.

[i must plug the wonderful Cornish Pasty cafe on the King's Rd. at this point]

Clacking up the King's Road in some modest heels was an opportunity not to be missed ~ window shopping in the fancy designer stores as I trotted along. Didn't quite have the courage to investigate Nine West's take on the J Lo style, I'll go to the bigger Covent Garden first thing in the morning one day soon.

I did go into Peter Jones for a rather more utilitarian visit to the kitchen department. This is in the basement and I started down the flight of steps fairly well to begin with but was a little to ambitious and soon stumbled in a clatter near the bottom. The non-descript girl behind me give me one hell of a funny look when we walked into the departement. :(

The stairs in the Tube (Underground trains) stations are rather a problem too. Leaping two steps at a time on going up draws a bit too much attention as well.

I think I need lessons from Laurie on how to run down stairs..... :(

and I also wish my middle toes didn't go to sleep each time I go out.

Ionic:-) You posted that every time you go out in your heels that your middle toes go to sleep. Could this be because you are using the wrong size of shoe or boot? Possibly a wider width or a larger size might help with the situation. Cheers--- Dawn HH

Oh I don't know dawn - maybe that is too pessimisitic and even a bit of of turn-off for keen young budding streetheelers. I was only twelve years old when I went started streetheeling in my Mother's shoes. I am now just turned 59 and it still gives me a HELL of a buzz!!! In my case the excitement has never lessened - heaven forbid that it should!

Cheerfully yours, Heelfan.

Heelfan,

your posting has been made quite a while ago but I came across it but now. You said that you started street heeling in your mom's shoes. Didn't she object a) regarding your age and  because it was her shoes? Very liberal! What did your class-mates say in case they saw you doing that stuff?

I did this too. I impishly asked the assistant if the pair of trousers I finally took would go well along with my 5" blade heel boots I wore at the moment I watched myself in the mirror. She was like: 'Yeh, looks cool, ... why shouldn't you be wearing heels...' - :) - Okay, I could live with that...

Dawn HH, I thought so too in the first place but if she would have been annoyed/disgusted/amused by seeing me in heels I think she would have reacted quite differently. At least I noticed that she obviously didn't have an issue with this. And this was the point. Okay, one could object those folks are trained personnel and they would do/say anything to make you buy stuff, of course. Anyway, I think you still can tell if they are positive or negative about what they are seeing. CU! -Mike

Yes, you're right. But I want to see where else I can push the limits a bit. So, I might not stick with that particular store only.

MickeyS.:-) When I find a place that satisfies me with their service and product to cover my needs, I usually return there and give them my business. I know, that is being loyal, but I wasn't thinking about you pushing the envelope and I can see your stratigy now. One example is New-port News. I have bought several pairs of knee-high boots from them. They fit well, are quite comfortable, and I expect to purchase other shoes and boots from them because of the benefits listed above. Cheers--- Dawn HH
