  1. Has anyone seen the whole set of pictures of Michele Nichols (Lt. Uhura) in Ballet boots? Who was making these shoes back then?

I have a copy of Regent Shoe's (London) 1958 catalogue which includes what they called tip-toe shoes. A pair of Oxford ballet shoes cost £14, 14s, 0p or the equivalent of £279 allowing for inflation today.

  2. Definately worth a look for anyone with Satellite in the UK. Normally showing at 2100 on Monday and repeated midnight on Friday night. The female lead Piper Perabo (best known for the lead in the film Coyote Ugly) frequently appears in 100mm and 120mm Louboutins. The current episode, series 2/10 World Leader Pretend has her in 150mm cut-outs from the 2011 season.

  3. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've no doubt there are many on here that believe that heelless shoes are ridiculous because they do not fit in with what they perceive to the the norm. There again, to the majority of the population the idea of of man wearing high heels is equally ridiculous. I perceive, having seen them worn, that they provide a new level of challenge for the wearer, who no longer can relax by rocking back on the heel. The properly designed shoe has a smoother profile than a heeled shoe and gives more of an impression to the onlooker that the wearer is actually walking on her toes in perfect balance. Of course, as the OP points out, you could just take a platform heel shoe and cut of the heel. It would serve the same purpose but that also indicates to me that the OP has little or no interest in style and elegance of a shoe design when worn as it is meant to be worn.

  4. I think more importantly, "Give some consideration to what the typical customer wants to see...." Regardless of the growing acceptance of men wearing heels, regardless of that the fact that a store is 'okay' with men in heels as customers, I think it might be VERY different for them to have men in heels as employees. You don't have to go far on this site to find threads about women not being too keen on men in heels.

Funnily enough, a UK tabloid reprinted an NY Times article yesterday which gives a good indication of where this is at.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2050300/High-heels-men-rise.html

The comments make an interesting barometer of where things stand as far as joe public's perception is, in the UK at least.

  5. Well, I finally got together with Persephone to test drive the Karo ballet shoes, just to see whether or not it is possible to manage to walk in them with any sort of credibility.

Standing in the was a piece of cake for her. She could walk in them, to a degree. Sadly, not to the extent that she would be happy doing video work at the moment which for her is the criteria she would use for deciding on wearability. It makes me wonder how the 160+ who said in the poll that they could walk in them would REALLY make out if they were stuck on their feet. The balance is a little off and unlike the traditional ballet boots, these really throw you forward due to the flat sole.

She has them to practice on mind, so there is still hope.

Afterwards, she slipped into a pair of ballet boots and went for a wander along the river front in the City Centre. There's a couple in my gallery of that outing as well for anyone interested.

  6. As far as I see, they don't ship to the U.S.?

So why not ask them if they are willing to if you cover their actual postage costs. They may welcome a chance to open the market up to another continent.

If they don't, well bad luck, but to be honest, consider that I cannot even browse a lot of what's on offer in the USA, because Ebay.com censors anything that they consider an adult listing unless you are browsing using a US user id. There are a lot of things that I know are available in the states a lot cheaper than I can buy in Europe, that I just can't see let alone ask if they will ship abroad.

So all in all it's quid pro quo.

  7. Man, I just don't understand the attraction. This entire site is about high HEELS, and these shoes don't have any! I know that sometimes I should just keep my personal opinions to myself, but I just can't here...and I, and I stress "I" here, think these shoes are not only hideously ugly, but rather inane. My apologies to those who like them.

That's all right. After all, we're not here to please everybody.

You say that this site is about high heels. I can think of countless versions that I look at all the time and think are bloody ugly. Think platforms..........

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  8. hey everyone! Just wanting some help in identifying the lovely persephones heels! The ones im talking about are the 7inch peep toe sandals, i know they are by the highest heels a long time ago but any body tell me the name of them as id love to try track a pair down! Xoxo amy

    Not much hope I'm afraid.

They were from the Highest Heel, but I purchased them well over 10 years ago. The chances of you finding another pair now are very remote. I don't even know whether they had a brand name, because they were bought before internet shopping had really come into being.

  9. Richy

Very nice indeed, they do look rather good; you have definitely found a wonderful model in Persephone - certainly look forward to seeing more.

Are they made and finished well as I am quite tempted by a pair.

    R

Thanks for the comments both of you.

They are made to a good finish, and very well put together, from what I can tell. Sizing was absolutely spot on to a European size. I had asked for a size 39, and that is exactly what I got. I even compared them to a New Look size 39 and it was identical.

I can also recommend Alan's communication. Once I had placed the order, I had a couple of emails to check a few datails. He then let me know when they were ready to be shipped and how long it would take.

A good idea to check out the galleries of new items on his site. The basic designs are being overtaken by the new goodies that he's producing.

  10. I've just taken delivery of a pair of heel-less shoes made by www.Imakebootsngloves.com

A quick couple of photos of them are added, but they were bought for Persephone to wear, so I've no doubt that there will be a few posted of them in use, when we next get together.

Fresh out of the camea, these are the first photos of Persephone in her new shoes, taken in the grounds of the local mansion house. Very comfortable to walk in, and they have great stability. She can even wear them on cobbles, which she normally has nightmares about.

We did some video of her as well, but that will be kept for now as she's tempted to start her own clips store in the near future. Maybe she'll post a taster at some point.

  11. Have just bought a pair for Persephone when she next comes up to visit in a couple of weeks. Then we'll see if they are wearable or not for real. Funnily enough, I have not come across any photos of them in use, only the Karo website photos. Might have to change that :-)

  12. I appreciate that the OP is now a banned user for some reason, but either way the info may be useful to others.

First impressions are that they are well made, very light and well padded as well. I've spoken to Allan, the chap who runs the store about the possibility of making them with a smaller platform, and that does not appear to compromise the design at all.

A quick couple of photos of them are added, but they were bought for Persephone to wear, so I've no doubt that there will be a few posted of them in use, when we next get together.

He currently has a pair of shoes and a pair of heel-less ankle boots for sale on ebay, but will make to order for anyone. His ebay member link is http://myworld.ebay.com/allan2764/

  13. To answer your question netball is basically basketball played almost exclusively by ladies in the UK. Slightly different rules and dimensions but fundamentally the same game.

Actually netball has very different rules to basketball. The only fundamental similarities between the two is that the ball is handled and thrown between players and eventually thrown into a net. You could say the same about water polo and handball, albeit the net is different.

Major difference between the two games is that once in possession of the ball in netball, the holder must keep one foot planted on the ground until the ball is passed, whereas a basketball player is free to move about the court, dribbling the ball by continuous bouncing it while in motion.
