Take them to a high class shoe repairer (not a "Mister Minute" or anything like that but a proper cobbler) and ask them to replace the top pieces with metal ones.

i agree. my mum used to use a proper cobbler nd i remember the quality almost rounded heeltips. I had my boots reheeled metal at the 'speedy shoe repair' shop and i got a lump of ugly looking metal welded to the bottom :) still noisy though!
