Optimism vs Pessimism

Recommended Posts

We all know about how healthy being positive vs. negative is, however I found something interesting. I don't know how many here have played with the "death clock" (www.deathclock.com), but supposedly if you put all your information in, it gives you an estimated amount of time you have left. I don't think it is suppose to be a negative thing (at least I didn't take it that way) but rather to show you how changing things can have drastic effects. I am not sure how accurate the statistics it uses are, but I assume some research and therefore some level of truth is in it.

Here is the interesting statistic.

I am overweight (I've mentioned it before) so I just assumed that would be the biggest factor.

I put all my information in (non-smoker, mode=normal, BMI=lets just say over 30). Hit the button, I get a date of 2043. Ok, now to see where I can try to improve things. I already don't smoke, so ok there. Change my BMI to <25 and I get 2047. Ok, 4 years added, not bad. Put the BMI back to the original (over 30), but change mode to optimistic. The results floor me. 2058. FIFTEEN years, without even losing weight, just changing my outlook from normal to optimistic. So I try to see what being pessimistic does. 2011!!! From 2011 (pessimistic) to 2058 (optimistic)! A 47-year difference by JUST changing to a positive outlook.

Just some thoughts next time you start to feel negative.........

No it's not. It is a well known fact that pessimism and a "normal" outlook have a stress factor and it is the stress that kills. Heart attacks, strokes and some cancers are related to and caused by stress.

I doubt that being a pessimist takes 47 years of you lifetime, but there has been studies that shows that being an optimist and beeing generally happy in life decreases risk of heartattacks and other stress related diseases. Don't worry, be happy!

Jesus Christ said, "I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly." You will never have abundant living with a pessimistic attitude. Right thinking starts changing all kinds of things in your life in ways that no doctor can explain. So any kind of "right-thinking" regimen: Christian, Jewish, Zen, what have you, will literally add years to your life.:rocker:

Keep on stepping,
