JeffM Posted July 24, 2004 Posted July 24, 2004 Scotty How can you say no one is interested when you have 272 readers in 4 weeks, nearly 10 per day. They might not be posting but they are reading and as they know what the thread subject is they must be reading because they are interested. If you stop posting in this thread there is no chance that you will inspire others to loose weight. Just think about what you might be doing to help others but with no expectations. You just might be surprised. Best wishes Jeff
sscotty727 Posted July 24, 2004 Author Posted July 24, 2004 All, Ok ok, I got the message. I just didn't want to overwhelm the board if no one was interested. I would encourage other people to post their success stories as well, this thread isn't just for me or about me! I will try to put an update tomorrow, that is usually when I weigh myself and all. I can tell you that I still haven't gone 1 day without 10,000 steps:) (actually 10,000 is considered a slow day for me, I usually average around somewhere between 12,000 up to 18,000!). I made a rule that I can't leave work until I get ATLEAST 10,000 (normally closer to 11,000, all done in 20-30minute fast walking sessions) and then I workout at home which adds anywhere from 3,000 to 8,000 depending my my workout. Days I lift weights I do 20mins of running in place. Days I don't lift weights I do 1hr of running in place. Today (Saturday) is my "offday" so I walked in place until I got over 10,000 steps (last week I walked around the neighborhood but it was raining today). Scotty
shyguy Posted July 27, 2004 Posted July 27, 2004 Personally I have cut out most of my sweets which is difficult for a chocoholic such as myself. I have also cut down on what I eat overall. Trying to start bike riding with my wife and kids (baby seat on my bike too for added effort) but weather has been against us, or people visiting. I also walk more often and drink water instead of fizzy drinks. Hope it works now and I start losing weight visibly. He was so narrow minded he could see through a keyhole with both eyes. sscotty727 Posted July 28, 2004 Author Posted July 28, 2004 Well, not much to update you all with. Still walking over 10,000 steps a day (did 18,544 today!), but haven't seem much of a difference on the scale (234 on Sunday, atleast it IS going down, just slowly), however since I am lifting weights (moved up to 3 sets of 15 reps of 25lbs) maybe some of what I am losing I am gaining in muscle. Anyway, I do feel better, less bloated and my clothes arent as tight. I look forward to my walks during the day. I am doing less of them with more distance per walk (2000 to 3000 steps per walk in 20-30mins). I also cut some more carbs out, think maybe they are slowing down my weight loss, plus need to drink more water vs cafene free diet coke. All in all, I feel like I am making a difference this time around. Even though things are going slow I don't feel as discouraged to give up and everyone tells me what an inspiration I am to them with the amount of walking I am doing, so that also keeps me going. Good luck to you all too! Scotty
sscotty727 Posted July 30, 2004 Author Posted July 30, 2004 Hi All, I am still keeping up with my daily 10,000 walk at work and weekends. I also alternate my workouts for 6 days, 1hr walking in place night 1, and weight lifting with 20mins walking in place for night2. Yesterday I got 11,360 steps at work, but was exhusted and tired lastnight so skipped the workout (1hr walking in place) and went to bed early. I kinda felt guilty for missing my workout, but I still haven't missed a 10,000 step day since July 6 (even my off days). Should I feel guilty for missing the workout, or do you all think the rest was as important as the workout? Scotty
JeffM Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Hi Scotty First there is no “Should” in it. You feel what you want to feel. None of us have the right to say how you should feel. Second, missing your workout is not a problem because you have been open and honest about it. I am sure that some one will in time tell you either from here or at work or home that “this is the second, third, fourth time you have missed a work out” especially if they become consecutive misses. Being open about it as you have done will keep you honest. And that will stop your need to feel guilty. Keep going Scotty you’re doing great. Best wishes Jeff
genebujold Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Since no one seems that interested in this, I am going to stop updating this thread. I have expressed my goals to my family and co-workers, so I am sure they will keep me honest:) Scotty Hey, Scotty - me too! Keep posting! Posts do not necessarily equal interest. Check the number of readers, too.
JinxieKat Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 I do hope you keep posting Scotty, I too have been reading the posts and keeping up with it. Now that my leg is healing from the biopsy I'm hopeing to start exercise again. I have cut down on processed foods. I'm just having a hard time eating stuff that I cannot pronounce or identify .. well identify is closer to the truth, I love eating new foods, but it better be food not chemical! Yesterday I weighed in at 186, lesse how I am doing next week JinxieKat
sscotty727 Posted August 5, 2004 Author Posted August 5, 2004 Hi All, Well, I have missed a few "workouts" at home, but not after already getting over 10,000 steps at work. So far: 1) I haven't missed a day at all with over 10,000 steps 2) I haven't missed a weight lifting day at all 3) I haven't eatten anything that wasn't low carb. Even for my daughters birthday, everyone else had ice cream cake. I did splurge, but I had low carb ice cream. Sure it isn't good to have that every day, but having that was better than having all that sugar. My weight is now at 232, but major loss but hey, still losing non the less. The fat analyzer isn't changing much, but I am starting to think it was a cheap rip off ($20 at Radio Shack). My pants are a little looser, not enough to get new pants yet, but alot better than the "could barely get them closed". Actually a few of them are starting to get overly big, so maybe soon it will be time to go clothes shopping. I also upped my weights from 20lbs to 25lbs (can't remember if I posted that already). I think next week I will bump up to 30lbs. Another thing, since I have been doing so well, I got new wedge shoes from Bakers. Here are pics, if anyone else is interested, these are nice shoes and VERY stealthy. The best part is I can put the hidden heels in for an extra lift after I did my 10,000 steps or remove the hidden heels and walk fast in comfort. Scotty New wedge heels:
shyguy Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 You're doing great Scotty, don't give up now. The shoes are a good idea too, and perfect for work and walking from the sound of it. Myself I have been ill, and not eating as much as well as on antibiotics which mean I exhaust more too I have also bought an exercise machine for me and my wife to use and we started on it yesterday. Overall my tummy is shrinking in size, and weighing will start soon too. Once again well done Scotty and thanks for the updates whic are helping keep me motivated too. He was so narrow minded he could see through a keyhole with both eyes. Brown's Law: If the shoe fits, it's ugly
sscotty727 Posted August 6, 2004 Author Posted August 6, 2004 Thanks Shyguy and everyone. Actually I have to start altering my workout as well. I have been doing 10,000+ steps at work and then working at home as well. Even though I have increased the hours at work, perception was that I am goofing off and just walking around at work, so my boss talked to me today and informed me (nicely) that I should keep my walking at lunch time and not throughout the day. That is reasonable. My new plan is on my weight lifting days, I will bring chicken packets (don't need to be microwaved) and eat at my desk while I work. That way I can do a full hour of walking. That way I won't have to walk as much when I get home to get my 10,000 steps in. Days I walk an hour at home, I will bring food that needs to be heated up and do 30mins walking and use the other 30 to eat. I will still keep my goal of 10,000+ steps a day just not all at work. As far as the shoes go, my pants don't even cover the heels and no one has noticed a thing. If anyone does ask I am just going to tell them I wear them because I have a bad back (actually true) and the elevated heel eases the pain (to be honest, I haven't had any back problems since wearing them). So far though no one has even asked a question. Good luck to all. Scotty
sscotty727 Posted August 10, 2004 Author Posted August 10, 2004 Hi All, Well, I have been sticking to my 10,000 steps, some at work the rest at home. I still haven't missed a day > 10,000 steps. This weekend is going to be challanging since we are going to visit my aunt in PA (5 hr drive each way). Not sure how I will get my steps in, but I am determined NOT to miss doing them. I might get Friday's in before midnight (can do most at work), wait until AFTER midnight and then do another 10,000 before going to bed. I *COULD* get up early Saturday, but I am NOT a morning person. I could also try to get in atleast half before we go and then do the rest when I get home, just concerned if I get home late. Anyway, I will get the steps in somehow. I told my wife that not missing a day is what keeps me going, if I start missing here and there I will fall out of the workout routine, so she has been supportive. As far as progress, now down to 230! Not a major drop, but 20lbs since I first started this:) Wish they came off faster, but hey, I feel a ton better (no pun intended). Good luck to you all, Scotty
shyguy Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 Ok so I never weighed myself the first 2 weeks, but last week I was 16 stones 2lb (226 lbs). This week, I am 15 stones 11lbs (221 lbs) so its going in the right direction, with diet alone so maybe some exercise next He was so narrow minded he could see through a keyhole with both eyes. Brown's Law: If the shoe fits, it's ugly
sscotty727 Posted August 14, 2004 Author Posted August 14, 2004 Shyguy, Buy a pedometer and commit to do 10,000 steps EVERY day (even if you just walk in place). I have been doing it for about 40days now and can really feel the difference. Good luck, hang in there, and congrats on the loss! Scotty
JeffM Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Good work Shyguy I am sure you know the benefits of exercise so you dont need any one telling you when it comes to weight loss. The side benefits of better breathing and circulation making you feel much more energetic are worthwhile mentioning though. Best wishes Jeff
genebujold Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Scotty, Shyguy - thanks to your shining examples, I've begun my own regimen! I calculate that at just over 2 steps per second, and visiting 2 casinos a day, with an average walk of 3 minutes to get from the parking lot to the network control centers, plus going out three times a week, walking a total of 25 minutes each time, I'm averaging a little over 2,700 steps per day. Unfortunately, thanks to my bad ankle, I really can't do much more than that, so a week ago I started swimming laps! I've been hitting the pool three times a week and swimming as hard as I can for 30 minutes while double-stroking (breathing ever other stroke). I estimate I'm burning through about 250 calories during that time, plus the additional calories burned due to increased muscle mass. On days I don't swim, I'm doing about 45 minutes of yoga, which, as you know, not only stretches the muscles, but it seriously tones them, too. My goal isn't to loose weight (I'm lithe, but still have 12% body fat), but rather, rebuild the muscle mass I've lost by being lazy over the last couple of years, trading some of my useless fat for protein. Even so, I've lost 2 pounds!
shyguy Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Swimming works wonders Gene, A couple of years ago I shed over 30 lbs swimming 3 times a week. I also felt so much better for the exercise, unfortunately I had to give it up as we couldn't afford the expense at the time and I soon piled the weight back on. Thats why diet is the thing for me to change for the moment, but yes Scotty I did follow your example and bought a pedometer each formy wife and I last week so I will start watching the steps. It's quite hard for me to walk lots though as I am in a workshop looking after forklift trucks all day with a 1 and a half hour each way travel giving me 12 hour days at the moment (if anyone wants a good mechanic I'm open to job offers ). But I will be trying to make some headway in the amount of steps I do, watch this space. He was so narrow minded he could see through a keyhole with both eyes. Brown's Law: If the shoe fits, it's ugly
sscotty727 Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 Shyguy, I do understand where your coming from. I also drive 1 to 1.5 hours each way to work and then sit at a computer all day. How I finally get my steps in is to walk at work (30mins to 1hr depending on the day) and then just walking fast in place once I get home. You are making the right moves though, good luck! Also, good luck to you too Gene. If your swimming that will also help (probably better than what I am doing). Scotty
shyguy Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Just thought I'd mention, we went for a bike ride today, 1/2 hour and only a coupla miles but I was worn out afterwards. I also had the baby seat and baby on my bike for added weight. Was good exercise though, and hopefully will be regular now. Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. He was so narrow minded he could see through a keyhole with both eyes. Brown's Law: If the shoe fits, it's ugly
sscotty727 Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 Shyguy, That is great that you went biking with the babyseat too! Good job. You know what? I think anything other than just sitting and watching TV or logging on is better. The important key factor is to be active, not sedentary. That think that is where my problems started, just sitting or laying around too much. I feel lots better now that I am more active. Scotty
J-Nation Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Just thought I'd mention, we went for a bike ride today, 1/2 hour and only a coupla miles but I was worn out afterwards. I also had the baby seat and baby on my bike for added weight. Was good exercise though, and hopefully will be regular now. Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. I hope this was at least partly for the baby's benefit, rather than just being treated as ballast! Emma
shyguy Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Yeah don't fret Emma J we included the baby for reasons other than ballast Unfortunately she fell asleep shortly after the start of the journey and missed the sights, you know daddy sweating, mummy panting and her 2 older sisters riding off into the distance with us both gasping as loud as we could for them to wait for us But she does make exceedingly good ballast too He was so narrow minded he could see through a keyhole with both eyes. sscotty727 Posted August 20, 2004 Author Posted August 20, 2004 Well, today makes my 47th day in a row of > 10,000 steps plus working out! I am also weight lifting 2 30 lbs dumbells at 15-20 reps! I was around 225lbs when I weighed myself lastnight. As I said before, I need to go out soon and get a new wardrobe, my clothes are starting to hang on my and my belt is in the last loop and not tight (just a few weeks ago I was straining to get it into the next to last loop!). Scotty
JeffM Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 So Scotty all that money you have saved from not buying junk food you now have to spend on new clothes. Life can be tedious cant it. From me a pat on the back for your efforts and success. Jeff
sscotty727 Posted August 21, 2004 Author Posted August 21, 2004 Actually since I have been doing a low-carb, high protien diet, I have been spending more money on meats and low carb snacks. The money is well spent though if it means losing weight though. Scotty
xaphod Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 This is a tiny bit of an image I posted elsewhere. It's very appropriate here ! Xa
sscotty727 Posted August 24, 2004 Author Posted August 24, 2004 Well, I just hit a major hurdle. Tonight I just finished my 50th day in a row, without missing, of >10,000 steps! Now onwards to 100 days in a row! Scotty
genebujold Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Way to go, Scotty! I swam 35 laps tonight (1 mile), which I've worked up to from just 10 laps (ugh!) about two and a half weeks ago. Tedious, though - takes more than an hour! I was overdoing it, so I needed to back off on the swimming for three days - and the rest and muscle recuperation paid off big time, as I was much faster today than last Saturday - much better workout. I think I'm going to vary my routine along three different lines instead of just two: swimming, circuit weight training, "fun" aerobics/flex (hiking, rock climbing, exploring with my son, etc.), followed by a day of rest.
sscotty727 Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 Well, my streak of >10,000 steps ended on Tuesday at 65 days in a row. I somehow pulled my back out and have been barely able to walk. I've been doing the ibprofen/rest routine (well, been going to work as well) so I have to rest and hope it gets better soon. I might try to do atleast the walking part tonight, not sure about the weights. Interestingly, since I have decided to tell people I wear heels to help my back, I have been wearing them daily as well to see if it does help my back. So far it hasn't felt too bad walking in them and my back has been getting slowly better as well. Scotty
sscotty727 Posted October 2, 2004 Author Posted October 2, 2004 Well, I've gotten out, back in, and back out of my routine. I've been sick this week so it was hard to keep it up. Anyway, I am going to try to get back into it today. It is going to be hard because I was just reassigned back to my old project, where I have to travel during the week, for 4 weeks (October). Anyway, I plan on doing my diet/exercise in the hotel while there. As an aside, I just watched the movie "Super Size Me" tonight. Wow, anyone needing incentives, please watch this movie! I will keep you all posted. Scotty
