No doubt, most of you have noticed by now that in my postings I have been using this emoticon. :-) You may be interested in knowing, (if you don't know already,) "The Smiley" was the first internet emoticon, created in 1980 by Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist Scott Fahlman in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Being the very first such cymbal, I concluded that it would be a nice jesture to include in all of my postings here on the High Heel Forum. :D :-) Dawn HH :-)

Chris100575:-) I DO know the difference between a cymbal and a symbol, but in the excitement of posting my very first "New Topic" and being a part of the world of music all my life, my brain and my fingers decided to use the word cymbol. I stand corrected. BTW, Chris---What is a "cybmal"??? Dawn HH

DawnHH;

Some people refer to the graphical yellow circular smiling face Posted Image as the smiley emoticon. And some people refer to the text based :-) representation as the smiley emoticon.

According to http://www.smileyworld.com/dictionary/story.asp, the graphical smiley was created by journalist Franklin Loufrani and published for the first time on January 1, 1972.

According to http://research.microsoft.com/~mbj/Smiley/Smiley.html and http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~sef/sefSmiley.htm, the text-based smiley was created by Scott Fahlman, and others, and first used by Scott on September 19, 1982.
