High heel history?

What is the history of the high heels anyway? Where do they come from? I have seen so many different explanations. I guess riding boots needed heels for practical purposes, and in the old days, mostly men used that. But shat about the stiletto? I've heard somethin about it originating from Italy in the 50ies...? Anyway, my point is, that if we look back into history, we will probably find that heels have been worn by men almost as often as by women and that heels cannot be regarded as "feminine" unless you are completely ignorant about history...

I think you'll find a comprehensive article about this on Jenny's site.
