BobHH Posted December 31, 2002 Posted December 31, 2002 The Los Angeles Times had a front page picture today of the old West Pier at Brighton partially collapsed into the sea. What are they going to do about it? Tear it down? It was such an old-fashioned scenic structure. I'm taking this opportunity to try to put up a picture of the BW taken looking the other way, in July 2000. It's not real great, as her face is in shade, but I liked it. Please bear with me. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid44/p3bda269ee34cc962a0b0009cfbabdb54/fcdb800e.jpg.orig.jpg Well, I see that won't work. The site won't allow it. Sorry. Here's another try at pictures: Link: http://home.ix.netcom.com/~rbh1
AndyB Posted January 3, 2003 Posted January 3, 2003 Hi Bob, Seems as if ImageStation.com only allows downloads when the referring page is from thier domain (the new-window & paste trick won't work). Fortunately 'wget' allows us to manually set the referrer. spiky heels Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 Andy, I don't know if you realise but the picture you posted is of Brighton's Palace pier recent;y renamed Brighton Pier. The West Pier is much older and is approx 1100m west of Brighton pier. It's been closed since about 1974 due to a fire but was actually derelict before that. As Bob commented part of it has colapsed recently in the gales. To answer Bob's question regarding the future of the West Pier. It's owned by the West Pier Trust, they have got national lottery money to partly fund it's restoration. Money has also been given by private individuals including Chris Eubank the former boxer and now a prominent Brighton resident. However the discussions on what form the restoration should take were still continuing when part of it collapsed. The structure is a grade 1 listed building, the only pier in the country to have this so any restoration has to be in character with the origonal. The future of the pier is as uncertain now as ever and it looks like it could suffer more damage in the winter storms that are likely to occur until about May.

I didn't know -- I just 'wget'ed (wgot?!) the link that BobHH posted and mirrored it so people who don't want to have to work around the annoying webserver filters could see it!. Thanks for the correction -- Mustv'e been asleep at the keyboard again I'll edit the post.
Dr. Shoe Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 God, that picture brings back memories! I used to do the East Sussex run and spent many a happy hour creeping along the seafront in the perpetual traffic jam. You must have been right opposite "The Grand" or perhaps the Exhibition Centre? and I would say that she was looking directly at the west pier. Actually, the east pier have registered their opposition to the old pier re-opening, but it's just a case of... pier pressure (Saw it on another board and just couldn't resist!!! Not my joke, honest.) Graduate footwear designer able to advise and assist on modification and shoe making projects.
