A friend and I were having coffee at a mall when we spotted a woman on crutches with her leg in a long cast. She did very well on them especially with her "good foot" in a sandal similar to the one in the link with very nice open toes. We were surprised that with most of her toes on her good foot showing, but she had a sock pulled over her casted toes. What could be seen of her toes, they were very nice and I am in a warm climate. Sorry to be so long of a question.

Was the cast looking fresh or older? If fresh, the women might be covering some of the discoloring that resulted form her recent injury? If older, she might be concerned with her skin dehydrating and cracking, so she wears a sock to help keep the moisturizing lotion out of public view. Just speculating.

The reason why she was wearing a sock - was simply to keep her toes warm and the blood circulating better.

When you wear a cast - the blood circulation in your leg is restricted as you are not using the muscles, so a) your skin can dehydrate and crack  the muscle tissues can waste slightly, and :D the blood is not pumped through the blood vessels as efficiently. The result is that your extremeties get cold.
