genebujold Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 This isn't much of a rant, but more of an accolade, as when I enter "high heel meeting place" into Google, guess which website shows at the top of the heap?
JeffM Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 Yes I have noticed that too Gene. And the same if you enter hhplace but I think that would be more expected. Jeff
PJ Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 This forum appears first in the unsponsored link area of the following search engines: Msn Dogpile Lycos Ask Jeeves HotBot Netscape Iwon Infoseek but is not first in the unsponsored link area at the following search engines: AltaVista Overture click .... click .... click .... The sensual sound of stiletto heels on a hard surface.
raccoon Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 Sorry guys, but I'm not impressed. hhplace is the domain name, that is why it appears at the top. "high heel meeting place" (including the quotation marks) is a highly specific 4 word phrase. How often do you use this literal phrase apart from the context of this board? Even if not in quotes, Google tries to find these words together and lists the item at the top.
raccoon Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 It's all tongue in cheek, Jeff I like being a kill joy once in a while. It's good to know it's easy to recover this site if you ever lose your browser bookmarks/favorites.
JeffM Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 It's all tongue in cheek, Jeff I like being a kill joy once in a while. I know what you mean Raccoon. I have been a stirrer as far back as I remember. Still it is nice to pretend that we are top of the list because we deserve to be. Jeff
Firefox Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 Well, we are actually at the top of the list for forums. If you enter some much less specific search phrase like high heels meeting forum discussion http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=high+heels+meeting+forum+discussion&btnG=Google+Search or high heels board discussion http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=high+heels+board+discussion&btnG=Search you will see we feature at the top or within the first few results. This is because Google ranks websites not only on words but also what sites link to them, what appears on pages within the site, how popular those sites are, what is the relavence of the words in context, is the page properly constructed, is it a stable page etc etc. Our top ranking is due to our links, our traffic, our members, and the excellent way Jeff has set up the site on a stable server, with the correct headings in the HTML files and other factors. Google is a very selective search engine. It will relegate porn sites and generally useless money grabbing sites to the bottom of the pile. Our site is useful and relavent to the search words. It therefore deserves and gets top place.
genebujold Posted November 28, 2004 Author Posted November 28, 2004 Amen! Or, in more or less appropriate verbosity, "such is the expected result of such a highly touted high-heel website." So long as it brings newcomers our way, who cares how?
