Buses and trains are like that all over the world. I'd think someone was odd if they sat next to me when there were other seats free without having to sit next to someone. I've never been to Sweden, but I have heard it is expensive compared to a lot of places (including here in England). The US tends to be cheaper for most things, but don't forget that often the price you see does not include any tax as sales tax varies state to state, so people in the US don't always get things as cheap as you see them on the internet.
