No, Darling, they don't look silly - it's just not commonplace, so it appears unusual, that's all. Convention "dictates" that men shouldn't wear high heels, so generally most of the time, men don't, and to be honest I can't remember ever having seen a man wearing high heels out and about. So, yes, I would probably look twice if and when I do.
But you're also correct in a lot of other things you say, in that there are many other people who DO look stupid because they behave stupidly. I do also think that given the nature of this site and the people who are on it, that the person who wrote that and caused your offence should be a little more aware of other people's sensitivities.
Life and other people teach us many lessons and cause us to re-evaluate our way of thinking, and until relatively recently I also thought about things extremely conventionally. Certain events forced me to stop and and really think my ideas on this through to an extent that most people generally don't, and that's what has made me view things differently. To be honest, I don't believe Joe Public thinks about it at all - he merely deems it against the norm, end of, hence comments like the one that upset you.
I now feel rather sorry for men that you may feel unable to wear pretty shoes because society deems it "unacceptable". I suppose women's shoes were originally designed with high heels for those of us who like me are on the diddy side ; ) and until men wearing heels is more commonly seen in public, it will be viewed unfavourably by the majority. My own opinion is to wear what you like, and just remember, women never used to wear trousers.....xx
