Vintage leather opera gloves

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a pair of unworn vintage wihte kid skin full length opera gloves, but I'm a little puzzled about them.

I've posted the pics and as you'll see, they're somewhat tiny.

I know the old fashioned gloves had to be stretched wet and that there was a special button tool, but other than that, help!!

I'd love to be able to wear them as they'd be so tight and cover my whole arm!

Does anybody know the procedure of putting these on?

1. Generally, people in 19th/ early 20th century were slimmer and shorter, because they ate less. Tightly laced corsets compressed the stomach and didn't allow a person to eat too much. People were also more prone to illnesses, which had a greater effect on the bodies- even the ordinary flu could be lethal. 2. Gloves come in different sizes, so you might have bought ones that were designed for very petite hands . As for stretching- I don't know what it was really like, but glove stretchers were probably used. Tight fit was necessary- and, often, the gloves had to be cut apart in order to take them off!

What is good for a goose, can be good for any gender!

I cant help you, maybe somebody like Dr shoe who understands how leather works might be able to help? just looking around the shops this year it is pleasing to see ladies gloves being made longer and longer. I think it is a good fasion trend at the moment. best of luck getting them to fit!

why you wicked wicked lady. opera gloves too? visions of Bill Ward telephone girls enter my mind.

if you buy leather/latex gloves, make sure they are fitted. they do have opera gloves made of synthetic material that will stretch and cling. i've seen long gloves with cinchers like corsets you can tie to fit. however, if the material wont stretch, common sense dictates getting the right size. i admire you're fastidious attention to detail and full blown good taste.

I LOVE Opera gloves and have many pairs.

The trick is to fold them down inside out, with just ONE fold.....from about halfway up the glove back down to the fingers. Slide your hands in and make sure that your fingertips are right in....then simply roll the rest of the glove up your arm. When the whole glove is on....gently pull them tight, holding the very top seam.

Whilst I never had any success with the above pair, I have just ordered another pair on the recommendation of another HHPlace user:

Something tells me the leather of those babies is almost waxy with oils and the scent from them would be intoxicating.

A truly fabulous choice, utterly feminine and completely entrancing. Let's hope they get the outings and the appreciation they deserve...

Congratulations!

That's a truly delicious bunch of images MRRIOSO. Opera gloves just totally enhance the drama of heels don't they, like an extension of the aesthetic.

Thanks for posting. And also for the friends add, it's much appreciated.

Aah, I didn't realise that you were buying leather. I gave you the method to put on Traditional silk or satin opera gloves.....
