It was a small hatch in the belly of some Dakotas through which the aircrew or some hapless paratrooper had to squeeze himself to exit the aircraft. It was affectionately called a “sweeny hole” because of the perceived likeness to the hatch-way at the foot of Sweeny Todd’s barber chair. Todd, a 19th century English barber, would cut the throats of his customers and slide them through this hole and down into his basement.
