Typically this is done using parasite computers which have been infected by a virus. Usually they have the motive of slowing down a server by swamping it with requests (eg Attack on Microsoft servers by hackers who hate Microsoft (aka Denial of service) ) though I think in this case 52 users is not likely to affect things.
