Weird, I looked up "Regent Shoes" in google and got a site that said "Welcome to Regent Fine Shoes & Accessories for Men and Boys." It looks like someone is finally making heels for us gents :D

I wish I was a size 10

Hi Everyone! Allow me to tell all of you about the depicted shoes and Regent Shoes: I'm Lucy, a London businesswoman who always believes in dressing very smartly in business and at home, including high stiletto heels. I've just joined these Forums, but I wore that very style of Regent Shoes for years! I'm now in my late fifties, and for the last nine or ten months I've been posting "Lucy's Story" on Jenny's Forum. They are my reminiscences of my life in high heels, starting in the min 1950s when the first stiletto boom hit the shops when I was twelve. All of the instalments of my Story (36 to date) have been preserved for you to browse through on these Forums here - see under "Stories with a Heely Theme" section. Regent Shoes was at 39 Wardour Street (just off Leicester Square), London in the 1950s and 60s. In those days it was THE mecca for London high heel enthusiasts. For me, a young lady starting work in London and looking for the best in high heels, it became the centre of the Universe! You will read in my stories how I first discovered the shop, and eventually bought more and more pairs of wonderful shoes from them. The general shop with its lovely big windows displayed the most vast collection of high stiletto heeled shoes imaginable, up to a maximum of "Alps", their style with a 120mm (4 3/4") heel. For heels of 5" and over (including larger sizes for men!) they had a special private department through a curtain at the side of the main showroom. The shoe photographed was Regent Shoes 5" heeled court which was made in many colours and with or without the bow. I preferred it without the bow, first getting a pair in white patent and later in black patent. It was a FANTASTIC shoe to wear, and a superb style to look at. In my opinion, Regent Shoes had the best shoe designers ever, and the sheer lines and stunning sensuousness of that 5" model made it just about the best ladies shoe of all time! There is NOTHING around today that I like nearly as much - just look at the low-cut sides and the way the heel appears to tower up for ever! The photograph was found by Forum member Fred who found it in a 2004 calendar depicting a different shoe for every day of the year. The actual shoes are currently in a leather museum in Germany. The calendar is published by Workman and this photograph is on the page for 29th December. I am delighted that Fred spotted a photograph of those high heels all these year after Regent Shoes closed! They closed around 1970 if I remember correctly. Their closure may have been because the had invested vastly in being the UKs stiletto heel specialist, and when stilettos went more and more out of fashion in the late 1960s, they probably seemed outdated and had not moved with the times towards flatter, clumpier heels. An absolute TRAGEDY! I think they were the best high heel shop ever! Sadly, the Regent Shoes reference found by a member above is almost certainly nothing to do with that original Regent Shoes shop of London which set me up with so many of the pairs of wonderful high stiletto heels that feature constantly in my Stories. I hope that has been interesting and has clarified things. Love, Lucy

Although I've worn high heels as far back as I can remember, I don't believe I've ever come across a more spectacular pair of shoes than those in the picture. To me, they are the "perfect pair" of high heels. I said on another post that I'd buy a pair in a heartbeat. Lucy, your comments just reinforce my wish that this store was still around so I could.

Being mentally comfortable in your own mind is the key to wearing heels in public.

I love that picture of those Regent pumps. And I really really really love that bow accessory. Thank you Lucy for providing us some historical information about the company who sold those shoes. So sad I will never have a chance to buy a similar pair.

Does anyone remember a London based store chain called Derber Shoes, that had a store in Oxford Street, Bond Street, and Kensington High Street until the mid eighties. They sold a shoe of identical design and heel height (over 5 inches), but without the bows. I used to love wondering into their stores, just to see if anyone was trying a pair on. Saw many an adventurous young (and older) woman being astounded by the feel of them. Bought three pairs myself. Happy memories.

Hi Richy! Now then, DERBER SHOES! Following the sad closure of Regent shoes around 1970, the second stiletto boom came along in the late 1970s. Then Derber Shoes along with Ravel Shoes became the main London high heel retail successors to Regent Shoes. Both shops were almost alongside each other on the North side of Oxford Street, 100 yards west of Oxford Circus. I haunted those two shops just as much as I had done with Regent Shoes! Both shops will feature very largely in my ongoing "Lucy's Story" (my life in high heels which appears on Jenny's Forum), so I won't say more about those shops and their lovely shoes now, because it will all come out in instalments in my Story! Hi also to Bubba, Jeff and PJ! Your comments are much appreciated by me! Love, Lucy

Lucy. I had a feeling that you of all people would remember them. They did a wonderful line in thigh length boots as well, long before anyone else thought them fasionable rather than just a fetish icon. I've enjoyed every bit of your history to date, and look forward to far more to come. Very enjoyable reading

Hi Lucy! Glad to see you post a message here. I read all your story and almost remember it by heart. I already tried to search on the net for Regent Shoes as well, as somebody else did.

No interesting match, and the same for Derber and Ravel.

You know, I have to keep my high heels link page updated.

If you have time to have a look, tell me what you think about those italian designers and about my models as well.

Ciao

Hi Stylettos! I'm very flattered that you almost know my Story "by heart" - more instalments soon!. Your site is wonderful with all those Italian shoes, and I like your own computer designs! I've always felt that Italians have that special flair for everything artistic - drawing, painting, sculpture etc. and that goes for shoe design. It's all so sleek! Funnily enough, in my last Instalment (35), I mentioned that my house-sharing companion Velma had just received a wonderful pair of Italian shoes with ankle straps and 5" heels! They were excellent! When I have more time, I'll look forward to clicking on to your amazing number of links to admire the shoes on all those shoe sites. Love, Lucy

Oh, how utterly tragic! :( The Regent Stilettos in the picture were exquisite and I was so hoping I could find a source somewhere. The cut & style of those shoes are to die for. I wonder if a current shoemaker could duplicate the style? :D Ciao! Anita C.

Folks - it's EASY to get the whole calendar! Just walk into any good bookshop (US or UK) and ask if they've got it, quoting number ISBN: 0-7611-3041-1. At full price they're only about $15 US or £12 UK, but I got mine at my local bookshop (Waterstones) because now we're into 2004 they are selling them off at half-price (about £6)!. Then you can revel in 365 WONDERFUL shoe pics! I intend to display a different shoe each day this year (as intended), and then keep the calendar for life! Hurry Hurry Hurry before they're all gone! Good luck! Love, Lucy

Those pumps are magnificent. My wife is going to London in Feb but I don't think I can ask her to get it for me. She is anti-high heel, esp. on me. I am pro-high heel. We're such opposites. :D
