Another Fun Day In Public In High Heels

I took a day off of work Friday and spent the day in public in high heels from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. that night. I was fairly casual wearing black slacks, gray dress shirt, black sport coat, black pantyhose, and a pair of high heels like the one's in my avatar. I took two other pairs of high heels similar to the pair I started out wearing just for the fun of changing and wearing different high heels while out-and-about. After eating breakfast at my favorite cafe, I spent the day running errands and shopping at many different stores which included Walgreen's, Petco, Wal-Mart, Kroger's, Ace Hardware, several "dollar" stores, as well as two movies, public library, and our city's art museum. I always absolutely enjoy spending the day in public in high heels and going to the different places and enjoying the various reactions from people with whom I interface. But I have to admit, with the exception of a couple of frowns and sour looks, it was really low key and uneventful. There were a lot of smiles and grins and many "non-reactions" from many people, but no verbal communication with anyone. Usually I get at least one "...why are you wearing high heels?" or "...those are pretty shoe, where'd you get them?" But there were no comments or verbal exchange at all. When I went to the library to check out my DVD, CD's, and books, there was a new young woman working there. As I approached to check out, she had a very sour look on her face as she took my card. But after she scanned my items, she thanked me and told me to have a nice day. When I went to the art museum, everyone has seen me there so many times while wearing high heels that I received a friendly greeting from all of the staff. After the two movies, I met my female friend as she was closing her store, and we went to dinner at one our favorite restaurants. Again, friendly greetings, good service, but no comments to me about my high heels. I have said this many times over the past couple of years. I guess so many people have so much on their minds that reacting to a man wearing high heels is not a priority. But then again, it shouldn't be. I just have always enjoyed the verbal exchange when people are curious. But again, it was a fun day being out-and-about in high heels.

roniheels: Bravo to you on your outing. The mental picture you painted of your outfit made me nod as I could envision how stylish it had been, and because you dressed appropriately for the various surroundings you were in throughout your day, you were accepted by the public at large as just another person going about your business. While I'm sure some verbal interaction would've made the experience all the more enjoyable, the important thing was being out and about, and that's a good thing! Good work!

I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman!

Thanks for sharing roniheels-Glad it went well. I have another public outing story to share, as I encountered a little problem but came out OK. I was in a store (my 3rd public outing) when all of a sudden I got hauled by security. They stated that someone informed them that there was a man wearing high heels and they were accusing me of stealing heels and they wanted to know where the shoes I came in where. I informed him, these are the shoes I wore when I came in. I had shown him that they were used and you can tell by the sole that they were not new. The guy looked like he was a kid and did not want to buy it. Now in the past, I likely would have froze and run out of the store and vowed to never wear heels again. However, I asked if I could speak to the store manager or shoe department manager.....he finally went to get the store manager. She was a female in her mid-late 30's and I explain the situation to her. I showed her the boots I was wearing and she told the security guy that they were not from that store. At that point, the security guy just left without saying a word. The store manager said "Sorry for the confusion and hoped that I would come back". I was still a little shaken so I left the store. Outside in the store, there was a man (I'ld say in his 60-70) and he said "security is looking for you". I replied "how would you know". He replied I told security that you were wearing women's heels so they were going to look for you. Then he asked me "Why and do you often wear women's shoes?" I casually replied "they are just high heel boots and he should try it some day". I then hoped in my car and drove to the next place. Not sure if I dealt with the situation in the best way but at the time that's all I could think off. So maybe let me know if there was another way to handle this situation? So I want to end by saying thanks to all of you on this site for sharing as I would not have the courage to continue. I look forward to my next public outing even though I still have to hide it and have to venture far but hopefully one day !!!!

... now see, if you'd been wearing a skirt with pumps instead of pants with boots, then no one would have questioned the shoes were yours. I kid of course. That sounds like a fairly uncool situation. As far as handling it better, it sounds as though you handled it as well as it could have been. I'm glad it doesn't deter you. But just to clear up a point, did the guy call security because he honestly thought the heels were stolen, or did he alert security because he wanted to give you a hard time?

I guess I do not know the true reason he told security. Maybe it was just to give me a hard time because as I think about the situation now-the security cameras would have shown what I was wearing when I walked into the store.

yorktoncso – I am very impress with the way you handled the situation in the store. One of the things I keep stressing to new heelers is that you have to have confidence in yourself if you are going to wear something that is outside the mainstream of attire for you gender. It sounds like if you didn’t have confidence before that incident, you do now. Congratulations! I think asking for the store manager was exactly the right thing to do and it sounds like the security guard was overreaching accusing you of theft while you were still in the store. Where my reaction would have been very different is with the old man outside the store that said he had called security because you were wearing heels. I don’t think I would have managed to remain a civil in my comments.

Wow. I'd be angry if something like this happened to me, to the point where I'd write corportate Public Relations a letter and let them know of the false accusation, the possible slander effects of getting escorted by store security in front of other people to an office room in front of others, and the 60/70 year old guy who was trying to intimidate you. Is the brand you were wearing even sold at the store to begin with?

If that old guy had asked me that outside of the store, I would've turned the questioning back on him by answering "who wants to know?" It would have served to get the guy to qualify himself to you and reverse the position of social power.

Your willingness to continue heeling despite this is admirable!

I have had the occasion of encountering the police when wearing heels and have very good results. They have been 'sensitive' and understanding. I have been left to go about business. I spend a day in CHicago recently wearing high heels boots along with a black suit. Passed many officers and had absolutely no problem.

Went out lastnight with my girlfriend to a glbt club. I was wearing a black t-shirt, bell bottom womens jeans, and hilghlife 8" single ankle strap white in color heels. Went well. We had to walk about 2 blocks to the club. We entered the club and received the inital look from 4 people already settled in. I wasn't nervous which was a god sent. We ordered a martini which I say was strong enough to knock me off my heels and played a couple games of darts. I was so happy in my heels. I could see see my reflection in the front windows and I have to say that was a sexy image. It was encouraging to have people walking by the windows looking in and see me standing in my heels. No problems to this point. We were about to leave and I thought to myself I don't know what's on the other side of the door. We walked outside and I saw a man standing in the shadows a few doors down. Well we didn't have to walk by him so good so far. As we were walking I noticed we were walking at a much faster pace then going to the club. As we neared our vehicle I crossed the intersection. My girlfriend told me in the vehicle she saw a male in an alley that was staring at me, but then went back inside the alley. Well we left the area and talked and laughed all the way home. I'm uncertain if we were in any danger, but it sure seemed like it at the time. My girlfriend told me she can't wait until the next time we go out with me me in my heels.

Never become complacent about safety, especially when out with someone. 8” heels are not the most maneuverable footwear. If you venture back to that location, consider carrying a pair of flats with you.

It’s good to read that your girlfriend is so encouraging about your heeling.

Thanks Thighbootguy, I have 5" pumps but it feels like I'm wearing flats. I love the 8" heels. I agree with being aware of your surroundings. When you step out that door you hope there is no trouble on the otherside. All I can say is that we made it yet another time. I can't wait for the day that it is not uncommon for males to wear large heels. I would love love to venture out for dinner or a movie or just go for a walk. I love to just walk in the heels.

I often go to the movies and dinner in thighboots and a skirt. That sounds little more conservative (safer) that your last adventure. Give the movies a try sometime.

I'm glad your comfortable in your high heels, that takes some doing. The issue is do you present that "comfortable" image when your out in public? From reading you post, I expect you do present that image.

Although the folks posting here want the public to accept a guy wearing heels, and for a large part the public does, there are still a few that aren't ready to accept that image. Be wary and stay safe.

Happy Heeling.

Thighbootguy, I would say that I'm good at portraying the look of comfortable. I walk with confidence yet I still work on it. I don't live around big cities so heeling in public is a challenge sometimes. I felt great lastnight. I think our minds were racing a bit and it got the best of us. I'm a person who doesn't turn the hd and wish that the scary person wouly. If I have a negative situation arise I hope to educate that person, walk away and hope the person goes out and buys a pair of heels.

Thanks hiheellover23, I just want to wear my heels. It would be cool to get another person out wearing their heels and show them it's not to bad. I don't want to sound over confident because I have only been out a few times, but once is better than none.

Bravo! That's awesome that you have a girlfriend who supports it. I too would love to wear heels more and go to places like movies or plays, but it's finding that balance to wear what you want and not have folks give you grief for it. Still trying to find that balance myself, though I've posted my experiences of public heeling here before.

I've not pushed open showing of heels when out with my boyfriend yet, but have pretty much worn this outfit to shop for groceries a couple times recently. Did get a couple glances, but no issues.

My compliments,

I'm normally a black leather friend.

But these boots look really well.

Ok, was out again with same pants and grey suede booties, got caught in the rain so switched to the 4" black leather Cole Haan knee boots.

Question, why are heels always louder when you have a chance to back out of your public outing?

As Tech has in his Paste quay, "the world did not end" etc, etc, etc. Still nervous as I've been wearing heels on/off for 20+ years, but only recently decided to go for it as far as building up my endurance to wear them wherever, and whenever, without discomfort. The fun part of preparing for that is wearing heels alot :)

So, as said, wore these to the grocery store. Got less attention there with these boots exposed then I did with the grey ones hidden under jeans earlier this afternoon. Odd.

My regular digital cam seems broken, and cell has no timer, so no full shot of self.

Btw, doubt I'll be posting enough about my exploits to deem my own thread AKA thighbootguy, so will probably do it here, since not sure where else to do it.

Isn't it hot wearing boots in this weather? My feet would burn up in boots. I'll take sandals until October! But I do compliment you on the look and on your courage to go out streetheeling in those heels. Bravo! Steve
