UK's new government

Recommended Posts

OK, you guys in the UK! Now that your election is over and there were no clear winners, resulting in a "coalition" government, I am curious to know your opinions as to: What direction do you think the new government will take your country and what changes to you think will take place? Will they reduce spending and eliminate some social programs in an attempt to cut spending or will they raise taxes to cover the increasing costs of allowing programs to continue? What programs will they institute to create jobs and improve the economy? What changes in foreign policy are liable to occur? How long will this government last?

Being mentally comfortable in your own mind is the key to wearing heels in public.

I think with respect to the economy, foreign affairs and the general direction of the country, they will continue to act on the recommendations of the Bilderberg group. The same as any other western government.

Unless of course something has suddenly changed drastically overnight.

I suspect as the Federal state of Europe tightens it's grip, they'll have increasingly less to tinker with over the next couple of years.

How long will they last?

Who cares and does it matter?

To add to Amanda's last line It's only the faces we see that have changed, the same Civil Servants still "run" the country. Al PS I wasn't that high up, more in the (very) lower basement.

On a serious note, we had to get rid of the bully/buffoon Brown and his cohorts who hadn't the backbone to challenge him. He had no mandate, nobody elected him PM, not even his own party (it's called Democracy). A Tory government would revert to type and inflict swinging cuts. I believe the coalition is the best we could hope for as the Lib-Dems will hold the Tories in check. Let's hope it works.

tax. tax. tax.and more tax with maybe the odd riot thrown in

this is the most distressing scenario. I often wonder what will happen when the government taxes everything a person earns? Do they change the name of the country to Sweden?

Well if the country runs as smoothly and contentedly as Sweden then I suppose they could. I take it you don't spend a lot of time there?

bubba 136 i was only going by what happend when maggie thatcher was in power but there polices havnt changed they are still run by business men who like it or not will make a financial difference to this country, it seems that this country is stuck in a loop of voting labour who spend, spend, spend and then when the country is on the brink of collapse the conservatives get into power who then raise the taxes on everything to pay for the labours spending spree. as far as sweden is concerned its no different to any other european country, we in the u.k allegedly pay the highest amount of tax compared to any other country the only things that arent taxed is childrens clothes and food but there are hidden taxes mixed in with them too. there are rumours allready that value added tax (vat) is going to hit 20% all the european countrys are trying to find ingenious was to tax people without them rioting in the streets, but like Alsheels wrote the faces change but the real power is in the life long back benchers and the civil servents and thats no different to your country obama promised so much but when he got into power what difference has he really made?, too many people behind the scenes saying no you cant do this after all they are only spokes person for their party who after all said and done have to go and seek approval for any of their polices.

Good news and bad news ..... The good news is that we have got rid of 'the triumph of spin and image over substance' party. The bad news is that we now have the 'we are of the class who are born to rule you oiks' party. I'll grab an unrelated part of Cameron's biog which says that he has experience of industry ..... yes in accountancy and banking, before he bailed out to start climbing the party ranks. Remind me, what caused this financial armageddon ? Now it seems like Cameron is is a control freak to outfreak Blair or Brown. We know that the modern media will penetrate anything but a flawless presentation. Cameron, in his role as a Public Relations type excels in this. Expect that during his rise to power in the Conservative party all dissention has been removed or sidelined. Those who might have aspired to power, such as Hague, have been given plum positions to keep them rewarded. I am an exponent of the creation of 'added value'. In simple terms, real value is created by doing real work such as taking a piece of metal, bashing it and making a car which is of greeater worth than the ingredients. The creation of some financial instrument only has the added value that you can generate by talking up its worth to a gullible purchaser who, himself, thinks he can talk up the worth some more to sell to some other gullible purchaser. When everybody realises that the instrument is based on a falling value asset then the whole scheme goes belly up. Yes, people make money, they get bonuses, they buy houses, the Government takes some tax out of their salary. The appearance of business and prosperity is there, but the substance is just hot air, talk designed to flatter the avarice of the gullible. Is Cameron an 'added value' man? On the basis of his background he has NO CLUE how to run a manufacturing business. He may talk about revitalising British Industry. There may be some money for manufacturing start ups. As with such previous initiatives, the money will last just as long a the initiative generates headlines and makes the Government look good. When the initiative is yesterdays news and money is needed for a new glitzy headline project and just at the time the manufacturing initiative is getting into its stride and needing continuous, if not expanding support, money will be siphoned off for something new and the old initiative will wither on the vine. In all, I see nothing new here. Thatcher might have got the UK out of the last Socialist mire, but she had the resource of North Sea Oil to sell. We now have nothing. The cupboard is bare. I feel a terrible sense of forebodeing. Xa
