  1. I generally name my computers. For instance, the one on whose keyboard I am banging on right now is AnnabelleII. Back in the 80's I was running a partly - homebuilt - and - the - rest - kludged Z80 system based on a modified Xerox 820 motherboard. It had a speech synthesis chip and it's name was Twiki -- even though it sounded nothing like Mel Blanc's impression of a robot.

  2. Sweaty feet -- exactly the reason "pleather" and the other synthetic materials are so heartily panned in other threads. It's OK for a cheap pair of shoes but real leather smells so much better, feels so much better because it breathes and conforms to your own unique shape much better than the synthetics.

  3. I think we heelers have to develop a bit of a "thick skin", to the point where we don't really give a rip about what other people think. It's called "survival". Some people seem to think a little bit of knowledge puts them on a higher plane than the rest of us. I guess that if somebody wants to be boorish and inconsiderate, the best thing to do is let them be so. Just realize who you're dealing with, learn as much as you can and maybe someday you can really enjoy passing them by. Nice guys don't always finish last.

  4. Let us analyze the situation here. You have somewhere between 1 and 2 tons of steel, rubber, plastic, aluminum and glass hurtling along the ground at near 60 miles per hour. Four feet away (in the next lane) is another similar projectile moving at similar speed. Two more such projectiles track the same speed and directions, one is two seconds ahead and one is two seconds behind. You are the pilot of the first moving object. You don't need any more distractions. Please pay attention to the road and the other vehicles around you. Lives depend on your attention to detail. Obviously I voted "yes". Cell phones are a wonderful idea, indispensable in an emergency (when they work  ) But there are way too many among us for whom the phone has become part of their anatomy. With some of these people I am afraid it will eventually have to be removed surgically.

  5. That rig has shown up here a couple of times and it's always good for an appreciative smile. Some people are really ingenious and it looks like it would be a blast to drive, even with the engine it has. I cannot take credit for it either but it definitely looks cool.

  6. To the original question -- "Do you enjoy seeing men in stilettos?" For me, I don't know. I have yet to see one in real life. The only MIH I have seen are in pictures, here. My reaction is more of the "brotherhood" thing mentioned above. It's not so much "Holy Smokes! He's wearing heels!" as "Cool -- He's wearing heels." Women are a different situation entirely -- a pair of heels enhances the feminine sway and makes a lovely lady that much more so. Personally, I think stilettos look out-of-place on a man. Some guys can make it work but I think that is rare. My personal preference for a man's heel is more the block style. In fact, I think most block (or "chunky") heels are too "clompy" for women. But that is just my own preference.
