Nina's absolutely right about that -- it's not difficult at all!

Replacing heel tips is really not hard if you still have enough metal to grab with a pair of pliers. (Vise-grips or the like come in handy here.) From your post it sounds like the heel tip is pretty much gone and the metal nub is all that is left. That nub should have a rather well-defined head on it -- grab that head tightly with a pair of vise-grips and then pull the pin out of the heel. (High heels are usually reinforced with a steel tube running up the center of the heel. This tube provides a nice place to insert the heel tip pin.) Once you have the pin out, you will have a nice clean hole for the new tip. Insert the new pin into this hole and align the tip with the shape of the heel. Push the pin in until the heel tip stays put all by itself. Then hold the shoe by the toe box with the heel facing downward and whack the heel tip on the edge of a nice, robust surface (like a workbench) as if the shoe was a hammer -- think "Nikita Khrushchev" here . This will drive the tip pin up into the heel tube and seat the tip right where it belongs. There are a couple of other threads about this here in the "repair and modifications" area, even about times when things went wrong. Stiletto heels, especially, are subject to a lot of wear and this repair is very common.

Yes, there is a lot of sizing variation between different manufacturers, and even between different styles from the same manufacturer. The only way to judge the fit of any shoe is to try it on.

For me it's just because I like them, the way they feel on my feet. Wearing them around the house just isn't enough, I need to integrate them into my normal life to get more heel-time. That means going out in public.

Please allow me to paraphrase a part of one of my own postings from 3 years ago: As I see it, a high heel imparts an extra measure of intrigue and beauty to any woman, it accentuates and maximizes the beauty she already has. I believe the ladies really have nothing to worry about from us guys. No matter what we wear nor how well we wear it, we'll never approach the level of grace, beauty and elegance that is part of a real lady's nature. (Nor should we even try.)

There is some sense in collecting shoes that you will actually wear I have been operating in that mode (with varying degrees of success -- there are so many extremely beautiful shoes out there) too.

Sounds like you need to be there for her. She may eventually come to the realization that she is in an unhealthy relationship but you are not in a position to push the situation. It will be hard to keep a level head given your emotional investment but you have to do it. And the requisite disclaimer from me: I am not a counselor nor do I play one on TV.

Generally the measurement is made along the back of the shoe because that is the easiest way to do it. It can be somewhat misleading, however, especially as the heels get higher. There are some suggestions that the measurement be made through the center of the heel but that gets a little bit tricky also.

Does Mary Janes come under the heading of pumps?

I would think that MJ's are basically pumps with instep straps.

I still think they carry an air of sweetness and innocence, they are very cute.
