  1. One trick for using a holesaw without the centre bit is to drill a hole in a piece of scrap wood, using the centre bit in the usual way. Then use this as a guide when drilling the wanted item. Ideally clamp the guide and wanted item together. Works perfectly in my experience.

  2. I've just bought these: https://www.asos.com/devils-advocate/devils-advocate-heeled-cuban-boots-in-leopard/prd/204126104#colourWayId-204126112

I needed to go up a size. Lower heel than my other leopard print boots from Asos but they are real leather. All indications on the website and box is that these were expensive boots - over £200 originally. I paid £46 by getting new customer discount, easily done by signing up with a different email address. They seem well made and comfortable but I haven't yet worn them outside. Soles, although synthetic, are a bit slippery. I'll rough them up before wearing outside.

If you need a song for that part of the world it could be "The Lass of Richmond Hill" or "On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at"

Although some people do dress up for the theatre in London, I don't think there's any mainstream London music or theatre venue that would have any objection to jeans and trainers.  This may be less true out of London where theatre isn't so readily available.

This isn't the photo I was thinking of but here's Michelle O'Neill in classic 3" courts: https://www.politics.co.uk/reference/michelle-oneill-profile/

Some photos of her in 3"+ courts here: https://apnews.com/article/northern-ireland-government-sinn-fein-stormont-brexit-33dae8ed4649c9386366e2dcd73f7391

  5. Went to the theatre last night - Fascinating Aida at the London Palladium - great show. This may be their last ever tour so catch a performance if you can. If you look them up, be aware that some of their material is NSFW. I'm also warning that some may not like the overtly political nature of some of their songs, but that's not a legitimate topic for this forum.

Saw plenty of heels, though mine were the only ones on a man. Examples seen on the tube (subway for left pondians)  included black 4" block heel knee high boots on a young woman, 4.5", possibly 5", "nude" stiletto sandals on a woman out with her man. She looked at ease with them, even though most women would think of them as "taxi shoes". A few more thin heels up to 4" and loads of block heels up to 3".

Some recent photos of Michelle O'Neill, the new Northern Ireland First Minister, show her in possibly 4" stiletto court shoes. I wonder if she was wearing them when she met Rishi Sunak (UK prime minister and not very tall). Whatever you may think of O'Neill, Sunak and all again their politics isn't a subject for HHP.

  6. Many years ago I visited The Little Shoe Box. It was only about 5 miles (London miles - they're rather long due to city traffic) from where I live. I tried on a pair of 5" heel boots. I'm petty sure I was served by the owner. I regret that I never actually bought anything from them.

  7. I've not yet been called for jury service. Apparently only about 35% of the population in England gets called during their lifetime. The upper age for jury service was 70, but was raised to 75 a few years ago. I've got under 8 years to go.

Scotland has a different legal system to England.

  8. There may be an old thread on this but I can't find it.

Even in London it's rare to see men wearing heels in public.

Yesterday evening I saw a man on the Tube (London Underground) wearing ankle boots with about 2.5" block heels. Black suede or fake suede, simple design. He was in his 50s or 60s and otherwise unremarkable. I was wearing my Hush Puppies brown wedge ankle boots with about 2.75" heel.

  9. I was in central London one afternoon last week. There were quite a lot of women wearing heels. Including one with knee high stiletto boots (about 4" heel) over leather trousers. Boots and trousers were the same shade of oatmeal and fitted so well that it was difficult to discern that the boots and trousers were actually separate items. That was in Piccadilly, opposite the Ritz, so I guess they had cost lots of £££££ and were possibly made to measure.

  10. In the UK, the conduit and plumbing pipe sizes are different. You're not meant to use conduit for plumbing or plumbing pipe as conduit. Though there's no problem using a bit of plumbing pipe when (say) feeding cables through a wall to stop them rubbing against brickwork.

For electrical work it's rare to use larger than 25mm conduit, either plastic or metal. 38mm is available. If you need something bigger then use plastic or metal trunking. Flexible conduit is available in larger sizes, often for underground use. But you wouldn't be allowed to use single insulated cables in that application.

  11. BSP is widely used in countries other than the UK. I think the USA has its own set of screwed pipe threads. I remember once having to fit an adaptor between a bit of US made kit and UK pipework. It wasn't easy to find that adaptor. UK push-fit waste pipe is slightly smaller diameter than solvent weld of the same nominal size. Both will work in compression fittings.

And in other news, we are wearing heels....

  12. Yesterday evening, about 8:30pm, in the Kilburn area of NW London. Woman wearing white kneehigh boots with 3" heels, no platform. Mid length brown dress. Looked elegant, even though she was running across the road. Though I don't know why you'd wear kneehigh boots at all in the summer weather we've got in London at the moment. I've seen several women doing this in the last week from pale blue go-go style (very 1960s look) to black OTK worn over leggings. All seemed wrong in high 20s heat. (About 80F for left-pondians)
