Another Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

I know it's short notice but here's a walk near Dayton, Ohio this coming Saturday. Men to don high heels for good cause

XENIA — There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” asks young men to literally walk one mile in ladies high-heeled shoes! It’s not easy walking in these shoes, but it’s fun and it gets the community talking about something that’s really difficult to discuss: gender relations and sexual violence.

One in three young people experience some form of dating abuse.

“Whether physical or emotional, dating violence can leave scars that last a lifetime. Teens who suffer abuse at the hands of a partner are more likely to struggle in school, develop depression, or turn to drugs or alcohol. Victims are also at greater risk of experiencing the same patterns of violence later in life. These tragic realities tug at our conscience, and they call upon us to ensure survivors of abuse get the services and support they need,” stated President Barack Obama in a Presidential Proclamation.

The Family Violence Prevention Center of Greene County (FVPC) will host “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” in recognition of National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at Five Seasons Family Sports Club, 4242 Clyo Road. Pre-registration is currently underway and registration and pledge forms may be obtained by calling 937-376-8526 ext. 17.

Cost to participate is $15 per person and includes a t-shirt and certificate. Prizes will be awarded to the top three participants who raise the most support for FVPC, and all participants raising a minimum of $100 will have their participation fees waived. Want to support this event but not walk? Try “Boots ‘n’ Bulbs” and plant a spring flower bulb in a boot to promote awareness of violence against men.

For more information or to register by phone call 937-376-8526 ext. 17.
