The first time I saw a Guy in heels.

Recommended Posts

I was reminicing with some colleagues at work the other day about the old days as i had just completed 30 years with the British Civil Service, I'm 47 now and have been there (not in the same office naturally) man and boy since 16 years old. As i was thinking back an old memory came back that i hadnt thought of in years that was high heel related. In the first office I started working in (this would be 1980/1) there was a guy I worked a couple of desks away who wore high heeled boots, we are lookin at 4in plus here (no word of a lie). I'll go into more detail...... This guy who's name was Ken was a few years older than me, probably in his early 20's. His hair looked like Ian Anderson out of Jethro Tull, in that it was long and flew out in all directions and a whispy tash and beard, he wore loads of jewellery mainly bangles, rings and a sharks tooth pendant. Mainly T-shirts with a denim jacket and very tight denim jeans, i do remember once he wore a purple velvet jacket and a linen shirt unbuttoned to just above his chest. He had a very individual style, but the one thing that stood out amongst all others was his footwear. I cant remember much about what he wore previously although i seem to remember they were always boots and mainly cowboy styled and had taller than normal cuban heels. One day he came in with a pair of bright white boots with a 4in... yes 4in plus stacked heel, thicker than a stiletto but thinner than a cuban heel. The toes were almond shaped. It was hard to tell if they were womens boots, they could have passed as them, but they had a masculine look to them too, so could have been purchased from a specialist fashion shop as he did have an individual style. He was quite a small guy probably about 5ft 4in so didnt look overly tall in these boots and he walked very well in them. I later found out that he had another pair of stacked high heeled boots in black suede that he wore when he went out. The thing is we worked in a high rise office and the floor i worked on must have had well over 120 people on it. No one batted an eyelid when he walked down in the office even the older members of staff (remember this is back in 1981),they must have been used to his dress style and thought nothing off it. He was totally confident and self assured in him self and had a generally laid back attitude to life, and as we worked in the middle of the town center he would frequently be seen by loads of shoppers and students when out on his lunch breaks, he didnt seem to give a hoot by any stares he would have got. I worked with this chap for about a year and he must have worn these boots constantly for over 6 months of these before he left to work elsewhere. I wish I had a photo of this chap as I have never worked with anyone like him before or since but remember in those days we didnt have camera phones or digital cameras. A totally regular guy who did his own thing and to hell with what anyone thought. Good on him! I was too young to have worn my own heels back then , that wasnt until i reached my early 20's but i am sure he would have been cool with it!! BTW the chap was as straight as they come and had a regular g/f for some years. Its amazing to think for all the time i have been on High Heel Place, its only now i remember this story, incredible. Ken was definately ahead of his time:smile:

Not bad. Yeah, we need to hope this Ken found this site by now. He'd earn quite the ovation around here, probably a little more than everyone else due to him heeling in '81, IN public, IN busy offices. A unique fella right there.

Unfortunately never saw any trace of him after he left in late 81' He used to wear "Wrangler" made boots before which were a bit more conventional male footwear but still had a heel of over 2.5in. As i said he was a small man so probably liked the extra bit of height to give him confidence. Never saw him wear anything femanine looking and as i said although they had a high heel they did have a masculine look, ie something a rockstar would wear on stage. The heel looked even higher than it was too as i dont think he took more than a UK6 or 7 in shoes. Still took courage to wear them considering the era i was talking about. The black suede boots he had were cool, they had a pointier toe and a contrasting wood effect stack heel of roughly the same height of the white ones mentioned, details are a bit sketchy as he only wore them a couple of times as they were his going out boots! I wonder if he still wears this style of shoe today and if he kept his look too, i guess he would be in his early 50's now.

IF your remember his name, why don't you look for him on some web sights and see if he is there! Just a thought.

I just did a quick search of his name on facebook and bingo pulled this up, i'm certain its the same chap, i am going out now but will investigate further!!!!! The Alex and Aristocrat were 2 local pubs in the area near to work

Does anyone remember Ken N***** from Canvey. Always wore white cowboy boots. He spent his lunch hours at the Aristocrat and evenings at the Alex. Where is he now?
